The original iteration of the club got its start back in 1946, but they never made it further than the Segunda Division and were liquidated in the early 1980s after failing to pay their players. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it helped the club start anew, and they have had much more success since their re-founding.

Getafe won promotion in three straight campaigns to make it back into the national league system, and then qualified for Segunda Division B after just one season in the Tercera Division. There, they languished for a while before finally breaking through to the regular Segunda Division and qualified for La Liga just two decades after their founding.

Since making it to La Liga in 2004, the club has spent just one year outside the top flight. Although they have yet to finish in the top five in the table, they have played well enough to make it into European play twice. Additionally, Getafe has two runner-up finishes in the Copa del Rey, giving the club more credence and stability. They have yet to win a major trophy, but it’s very impressive that the club has come so far so fast.

Finishing in the top half of the table has given the club some leverage to take chances in the transfer market. Last year’s squad was filled with old veterans, especially on the attack. Angel Rodriguez, Jorge Molina, and Markel Bergara combined to score 24 of Getafe’s 42 goals, and Rodriguez is the youngest of the bunch at 31.

The club has signed Nemanja Maksimovic from Valencia with the hope that he can be the team’s future at center midfield. Befitting their status, they have also brought over a half-dozen players on free transfers and will aim to get back into the Europa League by patching together another winning team.
