England vs. France

It has been forty years since England and France have met in the World Cup. They first played in the World Cup in 1966 and it was England winning 2-0 and England went on to win the World Cup that year. The teams met in 1982 and it was England winning 3-1 in the group stage. Both teams advanced and England was eliminated in the second round, while France went on to finish fourth overall. The overall numbers in the series have favored England, as they are 17-9 against France with five draws. The teams have not met since 2017 when it was France winning 3-2 in an international friendly.

This is a matchup between two of the highest scoring teams in the 2022 World Cup. There are plenty of scoring options for both teams, but the focus will be on Kane and Mbappe. There is no question that Mbappe is in great form, as he has five goals to lead the Golden Boot race. France also has played like Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann who can score. England has some dangerous players as well, as Jude Bellingham has shown very good form and Jordan Henderson is playing well.

The difference could be Mbappe who Giroud said is one of the best players he has played with. "Kylian is basically one of the best players I've played with," Giroud said in a press conference. "He is amazing and is still young which is scary as he can still improve. He is very efficient and, from the beginning of the competition, he's been crucial for us - very decisive, very competitive. He's obviously the best striker I've played with in all of the teams I've played in.”

Giroud is well acquainted with England players, as he spent nine years playing in England with Arsenal and Chelsea. He said that France needs to pay close attention to Kane. "We have spoken with Hugo about him," said Giroud about Kane. "He's a player with a similar profile to mine. He is big, powerful and he has done well in front of goal. I think in these last months and years, he's gone a bit deeper to get involved in the game. I don't know if that's due to his coach, but he makes a lot of passes. He's still a goalscorer, yet he can find those key passes for his team-mates. There are similarities [to me] but there are some key differences."

England vs. France World Cup Picks

The last of the World Cup quarterfinal matches could be one of the most exciting ones. England and France have plenty of scoring power, but right now you have to give the edge to France because of Mbappe. France also has plenty of players who are experienced on the big stage. I think there are two plays worth making in this game, so I will take France to advance and also play the match to go over the total.
