La Liga Matchday 31 Odds Report

We haven’t had many mid-week matches in La Liga so far this season, but we had some great games in the middle of this past week. Villarreal and Barcelona exchanged multiple goal leads before settling for a 4-4 draw, and Valencia grabbed a huge win against Real Madrid. Even bottom of the table teams got in on the action with Huesca and Celta Vigo dueling to a 3-3 draw, and that bodes well for the excitement level of the matches this weekend.

The top two teams in La Liga will meet in Camp Nou on Saturday. Barcelona have an eight-point lead with eight games to play, and if they can knock off Atletico Madrid and move that lead to 11 points you may as well start the coronation. This Barca team hasn’t been as dominant in league play as we have seen in the past though, and the fact that they gave up four straight goals to Villarreal on Tuesday proved that. The first meeting between these two teams ended in a 1-1 draw.

Maybe the return of Zinedine Zidane isn’t as rosy as it was made out to be. After beating two lower-tier sides in his first two matches back at Real Madrid, Zidane suffered his first loss on the road against Valencia last week. Third place seems very likely for the most decorated European club at this point, and it will be a rare trophy-less season for Real. They should crush an Eibar side that is just 1-7-6 on the road this Saturday though.

Can Girona win another home match? Girona have won just two of 15 home games this season (worst in La Liga), and if they were even mediocre at home they would be competing for a spot in Europe with their stellar road record. Espanyol have just one road win in 15 tries, so something has to give here (or more likely, the match ends in a draw).

Valencia can move into fourth place (at least for a short time) with a win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. Rayo Vallecano have not won a match since defeating Alaves on the road in late January, and the relegation-threatened club is desperate for a win.

Getafe and Athletic Bilbao have had fantastic defenses for mid-table clubs, so it’s not too much of a surprise to see such a short total even though these teams are currently fourth and eighth in the table. A win would be huge for Getafe to continue their dream season with established clubs like Valencia and Sevilla just a point behind them.

Celta Vigo are desperate to move out of the relegation zone, and they have to look at last week’s draw with Huesca as a missed opportunity. They are favored against Real Sociedad this week, and a win could move them as high as 15th with Levante, Real Valladolid, and Valencia all toiling close by.

Speaking of Villarreal, the Yellow Submarine have proven they don’t deserve to be relegated after their thriller against Barcelona, but they need the results to ensure that. They are underdogs in a tough match-up against Real Betis this Sunday.
