MLS Betting Odds – New England Revolution at New York City FC Match Preview

The New England Revolution are set to complete an improbable turnaround. The Revolution are currently in position to make the playoffs and end a three-year playoff drought after starting the season in the cellar of the Eastern Conference. They are in sixth place in the conference with a 10-9-9 record, but they face a tough test this weekend. New England will travel south to take on New York City FC, one of the top three teams in the East.

Odds Analysis

New York City FC have already qualified for the postseason. NYCFC’s 3-1 road win over Vancouver last weekend locked up a spot for the club, and they now have their sights set on earning the lone first round bye by finishing atop the East.

This club has been almost impossible to beat at home. NYCFC have only failed to pick up points once, with an 8-1-4 record in Yankee Stadium, and they have been in fine form lately. The team has won four straight matches, successfully navigating a tough spot where it faced four opponents in two weeks. In that stretch, Heber has netted four goals and Valentin Castellanos has bagged three.

In mid-May, the Revolution sacked Brad Friedel after an abysmal start. New England were in the cellar with a 2-8-2 record a third of the way through the campaign, and it became clear that something had to be done after the club allowed an MLS record 15 goals in a three-game stretch.

Enter Bruce Arena. Since the former USMNT national coach was hired, the Revolution have changed things up on defense. They have been one of the best teams in the MLS since that point, slowly moving their way up the standings. New England has lost just once in its last 16 matches, falling at home to LAFC.

Key Absences

NYCFC fans are bracing themselves for bad news. Heber is the team’s leading scorer and has been a joy to watch these last couple months, but he may be out for the next month after coming off with an injury against Vancouver. There is no official word yet on how long the Brazilian forward will be sidelined, but he is expected to miss at least this match. Midfielders Ebenezer Ofori and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi are both set to be out too, and defenders Joe Scally and James Sands will also be on the sidelines.

New England only have two players on their injury report. Defender Edgar Castillo is expected to be out a while longer with a knee injury, and forward Teal Bunbury is going to miss at least one more week with a hamstring injury.

Player to Watch

Maxi Moralez has had a fantastic season for NYCFC. Moralez is set to finish the year as the league leader in assists barring anything crazy over the next month, and his 18 assists are three more than Carlos Vela and Diego Valeri. The Argentinian spark plug has also netted six goals, and he is the most important piece in NYCFC’s quest to lift an MLS Cup. Without Heber, he will be asked to do even more.

Free Soccer Betting Pick

I believe the Revolution have a decent chance to get a result here. They defend well, and New England have secured a result in their last seven road games. They are healthier than their opponents and that will give them an edge.

Major League Soccer Odds: New York City FC 1, New England Revolution 1
