Week 2 NFL Odds Analysis

Week 2 NFL Odds Analysis

The biggest overreactions in the NFL almost always occur in Week 2 because everyone looks back at what happened in Week 1 and thinks those results will carry over. History has shown that Week 1 results are usually the most irrelevant in predicting what will happen for the rest of the season. That begin said, there is already little doubt that the Miami Dolphins are going to be bad, perhaps historically bad. The Dolphins are listed as 16.5-point home underdogs in Week 2 NFL odds against the New England Patriots. Let’s look at the NFL Week 2 odds and some of the early line moves.

NFL Week 2 Line Moves

Before we look at the biggest line moves, it is worth pointing out that there are four games listed with no lines because of the two Monday night games. We can pretty much predict what the lines on those games will be assuming there are no major injuries. The Texans should be 9.5-point home favorites against Washington, the Chiefs 9.5-point road favorites at Oakland, the Rams 3-point home favorites against the Saints and the Bears and Broncos a pick,

The Thursday night game on NFL Network has the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visiting the Carolina Panthers. Both teams are coming off losses, but bettors believe the Panthers will bounce back. Carolina opened as a 6-point home favorite and that number is up to 6.5.

The biggest early line move for Week 2 NFL odds is on the Buffalo Bills who are visiting the New York Giants. The line opened at a pick and Buffalo is now a 2.5-point road favorite. It seems unlikely this line will go to three considering it such a key number and because the Bills were not that impressive in their win over the Jets, but there is no doubt the early money is on the Bills.

The public and the wise guys are likely to be all over the Patriots in their game at Miami. I was really surprised the number on New England opened at just 15, as I thought the Patriots would open up as 18-point favorites. It may not be long before that is exactly the number, as New England is already up to a 16.5-point choice.

The Ravens were the most impressive team in Week 1 as they demolished Miami and bettors are already backing Baltimore in Week 2 against Arizona. The line opened with Baltimore listed as a 12-point favorite and that number is up to -13.

The 49ers opened up as a 1-point road favorite at Cincinnati and that number has gone up to 2.

The Sunday night game on NBC has the Philadelphia Eagles visiting the Atlanta Falcons and the early money is on the Eagles. The game opened as a pick and the line is now Philadelphia -1.

NFL Week 2 Totals Moves

There have been three totals that have moved from the opening number. The total on the Cardinals and Ravens went from 41.5 to 43, the total on the Seahawks and Steelers went from 46.5 to 47, while the Monday night game between the Browns and Jets total went from 45.5 to 46.
