Patriots backup Jarrett Stidham is the NFL Odds favorite to be under center for New England’s week one 2020 season opener. And he would make for an obvious choice. But there are other options available that Belichick would at least likely consider, just for due diligence if nothing else. Let’s examine the current field of the candidates with the unenviable task of taking over Tom Brady’s job at New England.

New England Patriots Week One Starting QB Odds Analysis

The last time that Tom Brady was not able to play due to injury in 2008 the Patriots managed to go 11-5 with backup Matt Cassel. That is why many gamblers believe that Belichick has the confidence to keep the job in house. Plus, the other candidates on the board with the NFL lines have weaknesses that The Hoodie may not want to take on.

Jarret Stidham

Stidham is a 2019 fourth round draft pick from Auburn. He has four attempted passes for his career. On the positive he has had one year to fully study and learn the Patriots culture and system. Plus, don’t underestimate the Belichick ego in thinking that he won with Cassel and can do so again with Stidham. Also, with Stidham the Patriots will save plenty of money that can be invested in personnel to surround him with.

Andy Dalton

With the Bengals almost certain to draft Joe Burrow number one overall in the 2020 NFL Draft that means that Dalton is expendable. Although Cincinnati claims to be undecided about the nine-year veteran’s future the writing is on the wall. Dalton is a three-time Pro Bowler, including as late as 2016, and has set numerous Bengals franchise passing records. Cincinnati made the playoffs five consecutive years from 2011 through 2015 with Dalton under center. Dalton’s production has dropped since a peak career season in 2015 but his team was also in steep decline.

Cam Newton

Three-time Pro Bowler Cam Newton has just had an ugly parting of the ways with the Carolina Panthers, where he has played since 2011. He led Carolina to the Super Bowl in the 2015 season and four total playoff appearances. Newton played only two games last year due to injury. His popping off last week is not a Belichick look nor are some inconsistent numbers since that Super Bowl campaign.

Jameis Winston

This should be more of a longshot than what is listed on the board. Do you really think Belichick wants an immature interception machine as his quarterback? Winston also gets low marks for his study habits.

Derek Carr

Carr has been the Raiders starting quarterback since 2014 and is coming off his best season as a pro. With Brady now gone to Tampa Bay and coach Jon Gruden voicing support for Carr he will likely be the starter for their first season in Las Vegas.

Jimmy Garoppolo

Well, Jimmy G was the original idea that Belichick had when he felt he had to start planning for Brady’s departure. But why would the 49ers trade the man that took them to the Super Bowl? The answer is they won’t.

Stidham makes the most sense based on salary cap, knowledge of the Patriots ways, and Belichick’s past experience of winning with Cassel.
