First round draft picks Aidan Hutchinson of Detroit, and Kenny Pickett of the Steelers have triggered the hopes and dreams of their fan bases.
Following the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers are grooming Pickett as their next quarterback. Hutchinson arrived in Detroit from the nearby University of Michigan, where he was an All-American. Although the Steelers made the expanded NFL playoffs, it was obvious they didn’t belong. The Kansas City Chiefs blew them off the field.
Since 2000 the Lions have only three playoff appearances. Detroit has never made a Super Bowl. But fans think that could finally be in their future.

Last week the Steelers won at Jacksonville 16-15 as 1.5-point dogs. The game went under a total of 42. Pittsburgh is 2-0 straight up, 2-0 against the spread, and 1-1 over and under the total. Pittsburgh trailed 15-7 in the 4th quarter but rallied for the win. Mason Rudolf hit Tyler Snead with a 1-yard TD pass with under two minutes to play for the win. Rudolf was 17/21 for 127 yards with one TD and a 107.7 QB rating. Kenny Pickett was 6/7 for 76 yards for one TD and a rating of 151.5.
All eyes are on the local hero Pickett. And the rookie from Pitt has looked sharp with a 138.6 QB rating with three TD passes and no picks. Pittsburgh fans want Pickett to start in the regular season opener. And he is pressing the point with strong play.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has made some interesting comments in the preseason. Tomlin said he told his players they are athletes rather than political activists. What was so interesting was that Tomlin has not been shy about wearing activist-style apparel on the sideline during games. Thus, it marks a symbolic change toward focusing on the future.
Tomlin has spent the past few seasons aligned with an NFL going overboard to virtue signal on social justice issues. While on the field, Tomlin suffered from the rapid decline of retired quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The coach seems eager to move forward with a new era.
