South Carolina Gamecocks Win Total Odds Analysis

South Carolina Gamecocks Win Total Odds Analysis

The South Carolina Gamecocks have a decent amount of talent coming back in 2019, but it might not matter. South Carolina has one of the toughest schedules in the country, and the current college football odds reflect how hard it will be for the team to pick up wins in 2019. The Gamecocks do have a veteran quarterback and some stability as coach Will Muschamp enters his fourth season, but this season is still going to be an uphill battle.

South Carolina Gamecocks Win Total Odds Analysis

The Gamecocks have one of the lowest projected win totals in the nation this year. South Carolina will likely need to knock off some ranked teams in order to hit the “over” this season, although the bettors are optimistic they can at least finish at .500 by winning six games.

South Carolina begins its season with a Game against North Carolina which could have major ramifications down the road. The Gamecocks follow that up with a gimme against Charleston Southern before a matchup with national title contender Alabama in which South Carolina will be a huge underdog. The Gamecocks then face off against Missouri, Kentucky, Georgia and Florida. South Carolina will be lucky to split those four matchups. South Carolina will wrap up the season with games against Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Appalachian State, Texas A&M and Clemson.

Alabama, Clemson and Georgia are three of the best teams in the country and are almost automatic losses, so South Carolina will need to win six of its other nine games to hit the “over” in 2019.

South Carolina Odds

The Gamecocks are hoping for a big season from quarterback Jake Bentley. He threw for 3,171 yards with 27 touchdowns a year ago but did toss 14 interceptions. Bentley had some issues against elite defenses and will have plenty of chances to show better this year.

Bryan Edwards will be the top receiver this season after star Deebo Samuel left for the NFL. Samuel was a game-changing talent and will be missed. Shi Smith is another capable playmaker at the position, and South Carolina will need to make some plays through the air this season against some strong opponents. Rico Dowdle will try to nail down the starting running back spot, and South Carolina will need some balance on offense because if not teams will drop defenders into coverage and force the Gamecocks to beat them on the ground.

The defense could be really strong if the returning stalwarts and promising new players mix well. Javon Kinlaw and D.J. Wonnum make up an impressive pass-rushing duo, and making an opposing quarterback uncomfortable will be the main goal for them this season.

The cornerback tandem of Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu is also talented and they will be relied on to take on some talented wideouts in the SEC. The linebackers were not very good last year and need to step their game up to help the other two position groups.

Key Stats or Trends

South Carolina has enough good pieces to remain competitive in many games, but the schedule is an absolute buzzsaw. The Gamecocks can’t get down on themselves even if they suffer blowouts against teams like Alabama and Clemson. South Carolina has a good enough quarterback and defense to push for the “over” on a conservative win total projection in 2019.
