College Football Betting – Week 1 Wiseguy Picks

The first full weekend of college football action will bring out a bunch of squares looking to make a fast buck. The only problem is the squares are what keep online sportsbooks in business. If you’re looking to pick a winner, which I’m sure you are unless those bills are weighing you down, look to the wiseguy action on the college football betting lines. It’s not always easy to tell what the wiseguys are up to but glancing at line movement and the action can point you in the right direction.

Wiseguys, also known as sharps, move the needle on a betting line because sportsbooks take them more seriously than squares. If the public is going one way and the line reacts in a way that makes the public team more attractive, you can bet a wiseguy is loading up on the other side. And that’s been the case for several matchups.

We’ll delve into a few wiseguy picks for Week 1 of the college football season, and remember BookMaker will have spreads and totals for every FBS contest in the 2019 season. Visit BookMaker.eu when you’re ready to place your bet.

Week 1 Wiseguy Picks

Georgia Tech at Clemson

The public likes big numbers and Georgia Tech was spotted 33-points on the opening line. With a majority of the betting action favoring the Yellow Jackets the line increased steadily and hit a high of Clemson -37 before trickling down half a point. Clemson is the defending national champion and the offense was among the best averaging over 527 yards and 44.3 points per game last season. We should see similar numbers with Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne sparking the group.

Dabo Swinney has called off the dogs before in romps and he certainly doesn’t want one of his stars injured late in a game with the outcome decided. That’s the thinking in this one. Clemson will forge a big lead and hand things off to the second-teamers. That should allow Tech to cover the spread, right? Well, this is an ACC tilt and Clemson’s backups could be starting for a number of programs. The wiseguys are all over this one and you should be too.

South Alabama at Nebraska

Typically you won’t see wiseguys betting on a UMass versus Rutgers game. The big money is on the big teams, or at least teams from the big conferences. Have the Nebraska Cornhuskers turned a corner? Sharps are betting on the answer to that question being yes and they are loading up on Scott Frost’s team.

With a loss to Troy as part of a 0-6 start last season, the Huskers have work to do. The once proud program has suffered through back-to-back 4-8 seasons, which is probably why two-thirds of the action is on South Alabama. Nebraska just can’t be trusted yet. The wiseguys are looking at how the Huskers season ended with four wins in their last six games. And Adrian Martinez is a bona fide threat who can orchestrate Frost’s spread offense. Nebraska opened at -32 and has been wagered to -36 from the backing of the wiseguys.

Fresno State at USC

Things get dicey when a team from a Power Five conference takes on a Group of Five school. There is a perceived difference in the quality of the teams based on the names, but the P5 teams aren’t always powerful. USC had a bad season in 2018 posting its first losing record since 2000, but the men of Troy are poised for a rebound. Or are they? Fresno State has been a top team in the Mountain West and was spotted 10.5-points on the opening line for this matchup.

The Bulldogs were hit hard by the public on the opening line yet the number spiked to USC -13.5, a clear sign that wiseguys are backing the Trojans. There are several issues with USC, but talent isn’t one of them. The Trojans recruit California better than any program and they will be playing with a chip on their shoulder in 2019.
