As an unbeaten title holder, it’s not a shock to see Ortiz installed as a heavy favorite per the boxing betting odds. If you’re not used to betting on boxing, a $1400 bet on the champion would return $100 if he were to win the fight at these odds. If Vargas were to pull off the upset, a $100 bet on the underdog would earn $750 in profit, so there is the potential for a serious payday if you like the challenger.

As the fight nears, there will be decision betting too. You will be able to bet on whether the fight is decided by KO, TKO, or decision, and you can bet on which boxer will win the fight in that fashion as well.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs Samuel Vargas Preview

There is plenty of fanfare surrounding Ortiz even though he is just 22 years old. He was a seven-time national champion as an amateur boxer, and he won the 2013 Junior Olympics too. Given his prodigious success as a teenager, he eschewed the traditional route by not entering the 2016 Summer Olympics as an amateur, turning professional just after his 18th birthday.

Ortiz has not regretted that decision. He has been unstoppable throughout his professional career, and none of his opponents have yet to make it past the sixth round against him. His ferocious style dropped his first four opponents in the first round, and that led to him securing a minor belt at the age of 19. Ortiz scored a TKO in the third round of his bout with Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez for the WBC-NABF junior super lightweight belt in February 2018 at this same venue.

He claimed the WBA Gold welterweight title with a sixth-round knockout of Antonio Orozco last August, and he defended the strap with a fifth-round TKO of Brad Solomon in December at this venue. Since he has flourished here, it’s no surprise that Ortiz is happy to be back in Indio.

Vargas has put together an impressive record in his decade as a professional fighter, and he was one of the top boxers in Canada. He claimed the WBA-NABA Canada super welterweight belt over Julius Bunda in April 2013, but he has been unable to hang with the best in his weight class. Errol Spence Jr. dropped him in the fourth round five years ago, and although he held the WBA-NABA welterweight belt for over a year, he lost a non-title fight to Danny Garcia during that stretch.

Over the last three years, Vargas’ results have been a mixed bag. He is 4-2-1 in that stretch, but one of those victories came by split decision and another came by majority decision. Vargas does not have the power to drop opponents, so his strategy will be to try to outlast Ortiz in order to win on the cards.

Total Rounds Betting

The fight is scheduled for 12 rounds. Total betting rounds odds will be available soon so be sure to check back. Total betting rounds odds is a wager on how long the fight will last. Let’s say if the total rounds betting line is Over 11.5 Rounds -200, that means that if you think the fight is going to go all 12 rounds, for you to win your bet you would need to bet $200 to win $100. Conversely if you wager Under 11.5 Rounds +150, you would need to risk $100 to win $150. As long as the fight did not go past the 11th round, you would win the under.
