One of the greatest amateur champions of the modern era will step into the ring once again on Halloween weekend in the Big Apple. Vasyl Lomachenko (16-2 with 11 knockouts) is a prohibitive favorite by the boxing betting odds against lightly regarded Jamaine Ortiz (16-0-1 with eight knockouts). Lomachenko has had some major setbacks since becoming a pro fighter, but he is still a big draw and beloved by boxing purists, and he is widely expected to face Devin Haney for the undisputed lightweight championship next year with a win over Ortiz here.
On Saturday, October 29, 2022, Vasyl Lomachenko and Jamaine Ortiz will square off at the Hulu Theater in New York City. This bout will highlight a Top Rank card on ESPN+ that starts at 9 p.m. ET.
Vasyl Lomachenko vs Jamaine Ortiz Betting Odds
Vasyl Lomachenko -1700
Jamaine Ortiz +805
Although he has been stunned twice as a heavy favorite by the boxing betting odds, the oddsmakers are giving Lomachenko a lot of love once more. If you are unfamiliar with betting on boxing, you would need to bet $1700 on Lomachenko if you were looking to win $100 at this price. That will tempt many bettors to back Ortiz as a $100 bet on the underdog would return an $805 profit if he were to get the win.
As the fight nears, there will be decision betting too. You will be able to bet on whether the fight is decided by KO, TKO, or decision, and you can bet on which boxer will win the fight in that fashion as well.

Vasyl Lomachenko vs Jamaine Ortiz Preview
For a while, we didn’t know whether or not Vasyl Lomachenko would box again this year. Lomachenko joined the Ukrainian Army after Russia invaded his home country in late February, along with other top boxers like Oleksandr Usyk and the Klitschko brothers. However, as with Usyk, Lomachenko was able to leave the country after the Russian advance stalled, and he has been training in the United States for the last few months.
Lomachenko is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a two-time World Championship winner at the amateur level. He came to the professional scene with plenty of buzz, but he was stunned in his second fight, losing to Orlando Salido with the WBO featherweight title on the line. He rebounded with a majority decision win over Gary Russell Jr. to claim that same title three months later, and he successfully defended the belt three times before moving to junior lightweight.
None of the boxers he faced at junior lightweight could give Lomachenko much of a challenge. He won the WBO junior lightweight belt with a fifth-round knockout of Roman Martinez, and he successfully defended that title four times before making another jump, this time to lightweight. Lomachenko scored a knockout of Jorge Linares in his lightweight debut to become a three-division champion, securing the WBA and The Ring lightweight titles in the process.
Lomachenko defended those two belts and added two others to his waist in his next three bouts. That set up a showdown with Teofimo Lopez Jr., and while Lomachenko was a sizeable favorite, we saw a lot of sharp action on Lopez ahead of that fight. That sharp money proved to be smart with Lopez winning a commanding unanimous decision over a surprisingly timid Lomachenko to claim the titles. We have since seen Lomachenko defeat Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Comney, but the reason that he is such a big favorite here is because Jamaine Ortiz is a relative nobody.
Although Ortiz is 16-0-1 in his professional career, he only has a few wins against quality opponents. We saw Ortiz knockout Sulaiman Segawa for the WBC Silver lightweight belt in November 2020, but he was lucky to secure a majority decision draw against Joseph Adorno after being dropped twice in that fight. Ortiz defeated Nahir Albright and Jamel Herring by unanimous decision earlier this year, but neither performance was that dominant.
