Teofimo Lopez vs George Kambosos Preview

There’s a reason that Teofimo Lopez is a heavy favorite coming into this fight. He is considered one of the top five pound-for-pound boxers in the sport by most observers, and he is looking like boxing’s next superstar at just 24 years old. Lopez secured a knockout in 11 of his first 13 fights, and he knocked out very good boxers like Edis Tatli and Diego Magdaleno. The current champion won the IBF lightweight title with a second round TKO of Richard Comney at Madison Square Garden two years ago.

Lopez upended the boxer that many had considered the best in the world in his last fight. He was a significant underdog against Vasyl Lomachenko, but he ended up winning a unanimous decision over the two-time Olympic gold medalist. Lomachenko came out slow and reserved, and Lopez made him pay with his speed and aggression on his way to the win. That has led to Lopez establishing himself as one of the best fighters of this generation.

George Kambosos Jr. doesn’t have quite the same power as the champion. Kambosos has mixed decision victories with knockouts during the course of his career, and he doesn’t have anything near the same resume as Lopez. Kambosos’ knockouts of Jose Forero and J.R. Magboo were nice, but they aren’t nearly as impressive as Lopez’s wins over Comney, Lomachenko, and Masayoshi Nakatani.

Both of Kambosos’ most recent victories came via split decision. He edged Mickey Bey at Madison Square Garden in December 2019, and he squeaked past Lee Selby last October. Bey and Selby are former champions, but neither boxer is in the same stratosphere as Lopez.

The tale of the tape is relatively even between these two fighters. Kambosos is 5’9 with a reach of 68 inches, while Lopez is 5’8 with a reach of 68 inches. Lopez is four years younger than Kambosos, and he is much more talented. That should lead to a knockout within the distance.
