Miguel Berchelt vs. Oscar Valdez Preview

Berchelt comes into this fight having won his last 16 bouts, while Valdez is unbeaten in his career. The two are friends but that friendship will not be a factor when the two meet for the WBC title. “In this fight here, friendship goes out the window and losing is not an option for me.” Valdez said. He went on to add that both he and Berchelt have the power to get a knockout. “Berchelt says he is going for the knockout, I’m not going to crack, but the knockout could show up for the other side. It will be a tough fight but not impossible… in my corner is my father and Eddy Reynoso. When two Mexicans get into a ring there is always going to be a show. I am in the position to provide a good fight.”

Berchelt is more than a 3-1 favorite in this fight and he has been very impressive of late. Berchelt knocked out Eleazer Valenzuela in the 6th round in June of last year. That fight was officially declared a no contest because it was not sanctioned by the Mexico City Boxing Commission. Berchelt knocked out Jason Sosa in November of 2019 in the fourth round. He took out Francisco Vargas when Vargas couldn’t continue in the 6th round in May of 2019 and Berchelt knocked out Miguel Roman in November of 2018 in the 9th round.

Berchelt said that there is really no question who is the best fighter in the 130-pound division, but he still leaves it up to the fans. “I leave that up to the fans,” Berchelt said to the media, “They can decide who is the best. I don’t like to say it, but that’s what I work for, to be the best. But in this fight, I’m gonna show that I’m the best 130-pounder in the world.”

Valdez has yet to lose in his career, but some people say he has never been the same since getting hurt in a win against Miguel Marriaga in 2017. The last three wins for Valdez have come against Jason Sanchez by unanimous decision, Adam Lopez by 7th round TKO and Jayson Velez by 10th round TKO.

Valdez believes that this fight against Berchelt will be difficult. He thinks it will be more difficult than facing Shakur Stevenson. “But why fight someone under [Berchelt], when I’ve got a main goal right now? Anybody would wanna fight the WBC world title fight. I do believe Miguel Berchelt is a tougher fighter than Shakur Stevenson.” Valdez said to th media, “All due respect to Shakur Stevenson – I’ve got nothing against him. But if I come out victorious with Miguel Berchelt, I would gladly fight Shakur Stevenson. I have no problem fighting him.”
