This will be the first title defense for Nery (31-0 with 24 knockouts) since he won the strap against Aaron Alameda in Connecticut back in September. Figueroa (20-0-1 with 16 knockouts) won’t be an easy opponent though as he is currently the WBA secondary super bantamweight title.

Luis Nery vs Brandon Figueroa Betting Odds

There have yet to be boxing betting odds released for this fight. Nery is likely to be a favorite though given he is the current champion. If Nery opens as a -200 favorite, that means a $200 wager on him would return $100 if he were to win. That line would likely make Figueroa a +160 underdog, and a $100 bet on Figueroa would profit $160 if he were to lift the strap over his head at the end of the night.

As the fight nears, there will be decision betting too. You will be able to bet on whether the fight is decided by KO, TKO, or decision, and you can bet on which boxer will win the fight in that fashion as well.

Luis Nery vs Brandon Figueroa Preview

Nery made his professional debut as a teenager at the age of 17. It took some time for him to discover his power early in his career, but he had no trouble with his first dozen foes. Victor Mendez was the only early challenge, as Nery had to settle for a split decision win.

His first big win came in April 2016 when he knocked off Martin Casillas to win the WBC Continental Americas bantamweight belt. Nery stopped David Sanchez, Richie Mepranum, and Raymond Tabugon in his next three bouts, winning the WBC Silver bantamweight belt with his fourth round TKO of Tabugon.

That led to a showdown with Shinsuke Yamanaka in Kyoto for the WBC and The Ring bantamweight belts. Nery won by fourth round TKO, but he had to give up the belt after failing a drug test. He took on Yamanaka again seven months later, and he left no doubt who the better fighter was with a second round TKO.

Nery defeated Jason Canoy and Juan Carlos Payano in convincing fashion to earn another title shot against Alameda. He was seen as a big favorite ahead of that bout, but he didn’t look great despite a unanimous decision win.

Figueroa is only 24 years old. He turned pro just six years ago, and he amassed a record of 18-0 before receiving his first title shot in April 2019. Figueroa took on Yonfrez Parejo, and he stopped the Venezuelan in the eighth round to earn the WBA super bantamweight belt.

We saw Figueroa pick up a fourth-round knockout of Javier Nicolas Chacon in August 2019 before the lone blemish on his otherwise sterling record. He and Julio Ceja met in November 2019, and the two both pressed the attack in an extremely entertaining fight. When it was all over, it was scored as a draw by the judges, although one of the judges had the bout 116-112 in favor of Ceja.

That meant it was important for Figueroa to score a decisive win the next time he was in the ring. He did just that with a 10th round TKO of Damien Vazquez back in September.

Interestingly, Figueroa and Nery were both on the undercard of a mega promotion that included the twins Jermall and Jermell Charlo in their last bouts.
