John Riel Casimero vs Guillermo Rigondeaux Preview

It’s been impressive to watch John Riel Casimero get to this point given the setbacks he has had along the way. Three-division champions usually don’t have multiple losses, but Casimero has overcome four defeats and is still just 31 years old.

His first major title came in December 2009 when Casimero knocked out Cesar Canchila to win the interim WBO junior flyweight title. Unfortunately, he lost a split decision to Ramon Garcia Hirales in his first title defense, and he suffered his first knockout loss in his next fight when he faced Moruti Mthalane for the IBF flyweight belt.

Casimero claimed the IBF junior flyweight belt a year later with a convincing knockout of Luis Alberto Lazarte, and he defended the title three times before moving up to flyweight to face Amnat Ruenroeng for the IBF flyweight title. We saw him lose that fight by unanimous decision, but he responded with a knockout win over Ruenroeng in the rematch.

In April 2019, Casemiro won the interim WBO bantamweight title with a late knockout of Ricardo Espinoza Franco. He has faced three challengers since that victory, and he has sent them all to the canvas to finish the fight.

Guillermo Rigondeaux is one of the most decorated amateur boxers of the last two decades. As a part of the Cuban National Team, he won gold medals at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics, gold medals at the 2001 and 2005 World Championships, and gold medals at the 2002, 2005, and 2006 World Cups.

Rigondeaux did not pro until he defected at the age of 28. He was fast-tracked up the ladder due to his impressive past, and he secured a split decision win over Ricardo Cordoba to win the interim WBA super bantamweight belt 18 months into his career.

He successfully defended that belt four times and saw the interim tag taken off before defeating Nonito Donaire by unanimous decision to add the WBO and The Ring super bantamweight titles to his waist. He defended all three belts three times, but some of the federations crowned other champions after Rigondeaux started fighting less frequently.

His only loss as a professional came against Vasyl Lomachenko in December 2017. Rigondeaux moved up two divisions to challenge Lomachenko for the WBO junior lightweight belt, but he was no match at that weight. Since that defeat, Rigondeaux has only faced three opponents.
