Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson Preview

This might be the last big fight for Jamel Herring. He will turn 36 years old next week, and he already has a lot of miles on his odometer. While Herring has only had 25 professional fights, he is a former United States Marine and served two tours in Iraq before beginning his pro career in 2012.

Herring won his initial 15 bouts before suffering his first defeat. He was unable to beat lightweight title contender Denis Shafikov in July 2016, and he lost a unanimous decision to Ladarius Miller a year later. Since that point, he has been unstoppable though, winning seven straight fights.

In May 2019, Herring scored a unanimous decision win over Masayuki Ito to win the WBO junior lightweight belt. He successfully defended the belt with a unanimous decision win over Lamont Roach Jr. six months later, and he retained the belt after Jonathan Oquendo was disqualified for repeated headbutts in their title fight. Herring’s last fight came against Carl Frampton in Dubai back in April, and he scored a sixth-round TKO against the two-division champion.

Shakur Stevenson is one of the most heralded American boxers of the last decade. Stevenson won a silver medal in the bantamweight division at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and he turned pro the following year. His debut fight wasn’t great as he had to settle for a technical decision, but he picked up a first-round knockout in his next bout.

It’s taken some time for Stevenson to come into his own, as he struggled to have knockout power early in his career. He won his first minor titles in January 2019, beating Jessie Cris Rosales and Christopher Diaz to win three lower-tier featherweight belts. That helped set up a showdown with Joet Gonzalez for the WBO featherweight belt two years ago.

Stevenson won a convincing unanimous decision victory over Gonzalez. He decided to take the next step up shortly afterwards, securing a knockout win over Felix Caraballo and a unanimous decision victory over Toka Khan Clary. We saw him win the interim WBO junior lightweight belt over Jeremiah Nakathila in June, but this is for the real deal.

The tale of the tape favors Herring. He has two inches on Stevenson, and he has a longer reach too. That’s how Herring beat Frampton in his last bout, and that gives him a good chance to pull off the upset here. Stevenson is talented, but he has yet to prove it, and that makes Herring a nice play as an underdog.
