Former champ Regis Prograis looks to bounce back from his second professional loss when he takes on Jack Catterall in a scheduled 12-round super lightweight bout on October 26 in Manchester, England. Prograis lost the WBC strap in a unanimous decision loss to Devin Haney in December 2023 and finally returns to the ring. It wasn’t a planned hiatus, though, since this fight was originally scheduled to take place in August but an injury to Catterall postponed the bout.

A former world title challenger and legend at the regional level, Catterall looks for that breakout victory that would raise his stock in the division. In May he avenged his lone professional defeat beating former undisputed super lightweight champ Josh Taylor by unanimous decision. Catterall opened as a big -400 favorite on the boxing betting line with Prograis having odds of +292 for the long-awaited fight.

Jack Catterall vs. Regis Prograis Fight Preview

I wouldn’t be surprised if Catterall is still seething from his loss to Taylor when the two met in February 2022. Catterall was the WBO mandatory challenger for the undisputed title and by all accounts beat Taylor. Unfortunately two of the three judges didn’t see it that way sending Catterall to a controversial loss, which was the first of his pro career. Catterall had the only knock down, dropping Taylor in the eighth round, and landed more punches than his opponent in 11 of the 12 rounds, according to CompuBox.

Former cruiserweight champ and boxing analyst Johnny Nelson said after the fight, “It’s decisions like this which turn casual fans off. Josh Taylor did not win that fight,” Irish online gambling company Paddy Power also said it would refund all bets placed on Catterall to win the fight since it was “an absolute robbery.”

Getting robbed of a world title only inspired Catterall, though. He shut out Darragh Foley and former three class champion Jorge Linares in his next two fights before the rematch with Taylor. The stakes weren’t as high since Taylor lost his titles to Teofimo Lopez, but Catterall did get his revenge with a decisive unanimous decision.

Catterall held several regional titles in the UK and Europe before getting his shot against Taylor. And this will be his second straight fight against a former 140-pound champion. His 43 percent KO rate suggests Catterall lacks power. That isn’t necessarily the case since he’s scored knock downs in a number of his bouts. Also his controversial loss and subsequent win over Taylor moved Catterall to No. 3 in the ESPN junior welterweight rankings.

Prograis does have something in common with Catterall. Each fighter’s first loss was against the same opponent in a world championship bout, except, Regis was the belt holder in his majority decision loss to Taylor in 2019. He got another title shot two years later KO’ing Jose Zepeda in the 11th round for the vacant WBC light welterweight title. In his second title defense, Prograis was knocked down by Haney and lost a unanimous decision.

At some point Prograis might feel like he’s walking into a trap. You have to be an aggressive boxer to win 83 percent of your fights by knockout and Prograis certainly likes to swing for the fences. A stealthy counter-puncher, Catterall lands a lot of punches when he’s actually playing defense, catching his opponents off guard. ‘El Gato’ also has a few years on his opponent and is willing to play the long game, wearing down fighters with his shifty moves and scoring with counter strikes. There is a reason why Catterall is a big favorite and he should win the fight. And if he does it’s likely going the distance.
