Undefeated Terence Crawford moves up a weight class to challenge Israil Madrimov for the WBA junior middleweight belt. Also on the line in this matchup is the WBO interim title. A former undisputed champion in two different weight classes, Crawford enters as a big -700 favorite for the fight scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 3 in Los Angeles. Crawford is coming off a dominant win over Errol Spence last July for the undisputed welterweight championship running his professional record to 40-0.

With fewer years and pro fights to his credit, Madrimov was fast-tracked to his current title. He claimed the belt earlier this year in March with a fifth-round TKO of Magomed Kurbanov. Madrimov has just 11 professional bouts on his resume but he had a highly-decorated amateur career with over 100 fights. The age difference could play a role with Madrimov nearly eight years younger. Despite his title Madrimov is listed as a heavy underdog on the early boxing betting lines at +450.

Israil Madrimov vs. Terence Crawford Fight Preview

When talking about the best boxers in the history of the sport Crawford’s name will come up at some point. Through May of this year he was ranked as the third-best pound-for-pound boxer in any weight class by a number of outlets. He got to that point by winning all 40 of his professional fights with 31 of them by stoppage. And it’s not like he’s been goofing around, either. During his illustrious career Crawford had held a number of world titles in three separate weight classes.

Having the undisputed championship in one division makes you a stud, claiming that in two divisions puts you in rare company. Crawford held the title from every sanctioning body at one point as a light welterweight and welterweight, one of only three boxers in the four-belt era to have that honor. So, you can say he’s a damn good fighter and you’d be right. And odds for this bout are emblematic of that.

In 2017 Crawford unified the light welterweight division with a third-round KO of Julius Indongo. Just like in a majority of his fights Crawford was the aggressor using his iron fists to send his opponent to the floor twice. The fight ended with a body shot prompting Indongo to say, “When he hit me like that my mind was gone.” Just a few weeks after that bout Crawford was forced to vacate his IBF belt when a fight with their mandatory challenger couldn’t be arranged.

There is some concern for Crawford like his age. Father Time is undefeated and Crawford will be 37 in a few months. This will also be his first time in the ring in over a year. Back in July 2023, Crawford punished Errol Spence Jr. to unify the welterweight division. Crawford won with a ninth-round TKO with the result never in doubt. Crawford outpunched Spence 185 to 96 and was comfortably ahead on all three scorecards when the fight was stopped.

Though his resume isn’t nearly as impressive, Madrimov is a force going unbeaten in 11 fights. Following seven straight wins to start his career, Madrimov faced his toughest opponent yet taking on the WBA’s No. 1 ranked super lightweight Michel Soro, stopping the Frenchman in the ninth round. The two met again eight months later with the fight ending in a draw, the only non-win so far in Madrimov’s career.

I haven’t seen enough of Madrimov that would lead me to believe he can win this fight. Sure he’s yet to lose and he’s been dominant with seven KOs and three unanimous decisions. But he hasn’t fought anyone near the level of Crawford and no amount of training and sparring can prepare him for what he’s about to face. You have to wonder what more can Crawford do, which is why he’s moving up again. And that’s motivation enough along with a masterful skill set to notch another victory. At such long odds it makes sense to pinpoint a round and method of victory to move the odds in your favor. Crawford throws crippling body shots wearing down opponents in the later stages.
