Although he stated that he would not agree to a third fight with Gennady Golovkin, the dollar signs were too much for Canelo Alvarez to ignore, so the fighters will be meeting in the ring for the third time on September 17. The first bout ended in a controversial split decision draw, and the second fight ended in a majority decision win for Alvarez. Most observers thought that Golovkin did enough to pick up a close decision win both times though, leading to a feeling that GGG was robbed. Golovkin is hoping to set the record straight in his third fight against Canelo, but he is a sizeable underdog by the boxing betting odds.

Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez Preview
Canelo Alvarez was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world earlier this year. His only loss had been to Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in September 2013, and that defeat came by majority decision. Alvarez is beloved because he is one of the most seasoned fighters in the sport, and this will be his 62nd professional fight although he is just 32 years old.
Alvarez has claimed titles in four different weight classes from light middleweight to light heavyweight. He won his first belts all the way back in April 2013, and he became a light heavyweight champion after knocking out Sergey Kovalev in November 2019 to win the WBO light heavyweight belt. However, his attempt to win the WBA light heavyweight title did not go according to plan. Canelo lost a unanimous decision to Dmitry Bivol in May, and that was likely a wake-up call for Alvarez.
This might be the last major fight for Gennady Golovkin. GGG is now 40 years old, and he has been a middleweight champion since 2010. Golovkin is undoubtedly the greatest middleweight of his generation as he is 42-1-1, and his only blemishes are the very controversial loss and draw against Alvarez. At the very worst, GGG should have split those two fights, and the judges were widely panned for their scorecards.
Golovkin has knocked out his opponent in 37 of his 42 wins. He sent Ryota Murata to the canvas back in April, punishing his opponent until his corner through in the towel. GGG has incredible power for being such a small fighter, but he has not wanted to push the envelope and move up to either super middleweight or light heavyweight.
There is too much value on GGG to pass up. The judges will be mindful of how the last two fights were scored, and that should work to GGG’s advantage here. Canelo was soundly defeated by Dmitry Bivol in May, as Bivol landed more punches in every round, and GGG can punish him.
