For the first time in over a year, Errol Spence Jr. will be back in the ring. Spence (26-0 with 21 knockouts) is fortunate to even be walking after a terrifying car crash that saw his Ferrari 488 Spider flip multiple times and throw Spence from the car last October. Somehow, Spence didn’t sustain any broken bones in the accident, but he needed to take some time away from the ring. He will make his return against Danny Garcia (36-2 with 21 knockouts) on Saturday night in the Lone Star State. This Premier Boxing Champions card is slated to kick off at 9 p.m. ET on Fox PPV.

Spence’s car crash has likely led to him being less of a favorite per the boxing betting odds. He was a -1000 favorite when he took on Shawn Porter in his last bout, but the oddsmakers are giving Garcia much more of a chance even though he has a very similar track record. Spence was a very decorated amateur, winning three straight welterweight national championships from 2009 to 2011. He was favored per the boxing betting odds to win the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, but he lost as part of the first ever American team to not win a single boxing medal.
That setback was Spence’s last loss though. He turned pro shortly after returning to the United States, and he has been dominant since that point. Spence ran his record to 21-0 with 18 KOs before receiving his first title fight against Kell Brook. The challenger had knocked out eight straight opponents within eight rounds prior to facing Brook for the IBF welterweight belt. Spence wasn’t able to keep that streak alive, but he sent Brook to the canvas for good in the 11th round to claim the title.
He had no trouble in his first two title defenses, forcing Lamont Peterson’s corner to throw in the towel after the seventh round and then knocking out 22-0 Carlos Ocampo in the first round in his second title defense. Spence wasn’t able to knock out Mikey Garcia in his third title defense, but he dominated the fight with a 120-107, 120-108, 120-108 unanimous decision. Porter gave him his toughest test yet in his last bout, winning on one judge’s card as Spence settled for a 116-111, 116-111, 112-115 split decision that gave him the WBC title.
Garcia knows what it takes to be a champion. He was 22-0 before winning the WBC light welterweight title in March 2012, and his fourth-round TKO of Amir Khan in July 2012 earned him the WBA and The Ring titles. We saw him successfully defend all three belts on four occasions before making the jump to welterweight.
It’s been a rocky road for Garcia since moving up to the tougher competition though. He could only win a majority decision off Lamont Peterson in his second fight at welterweight in April 2015, but he did win the WBC welterweight belt with a unanimous decision win over Robert Guerrero the following year. However, Garcia lost the belt by split decision to Keith Thurman in his first title defense.
He lost a unanimous decision to Porter in a bid to reclaim his title back in September 2018. Garcia has been able to beat Adrian Granados and Ivan Redkach in his last two fights to receive another title shot though.
