Daniel Jacobs vs Josh Ryder Preview

Daniel Jacobs has been impressive over the course of his 15 years as a professional boxer. He made his debut on the undercard of a Floyd Mayweather Jr. title fight against Ricky Hatton and showcased his exceptional power with a first-round knockout. Jacobs proceeded to knock out his first nine opponents and challenged for his first major title over a decade ago.

Jacobs was 20-0 coming into his fight with Dmitry Pirog. He had been impressive in his previous 20 bouts, but Pirog was just too much. Pirog knocked him out in the fifth round and Jacobs needed to climb the ladder once again. Jacobs scored seven straight knockouts with none of those wins coming later than the fifth round after the setback, and he finally claimed a belt with a fifth-round TKO against Jarrod Fletcher in August 2014 for the WBA middleweight title.

We saw Jacobs defend the belt successfully four times. Initial challenger Caleb Truax gave him his toughest test, but Jacobs sent him to the canvas in the 12th round. He quickly dispatched Sergio Mora and Peter Quillin and knocked Mora out in a rematch too before taking on the legendary Gennady Golovkin. Jacobs missed weight, but he did show his mettle in a unanimous decision loss to GGG. Golovkin won 115-112, 115-112, and 114-113, and Jacobs was the first opponent that GGG was unable to knock out in nine years.

After two wins over Luis Arias and Maciej Sulecki, Jacobs had the opportunity to challenge for a title again. He bested Sergiy Derevyanchenko by split decision to win the IBF middleweight belt, setting up a unification fight with Canelo Alvarez. Once again, Jacobs showed he was no slouch, and he won multiple rounds despite losing a unanimous decision.

His last two fights haven’t been too impressive though. Jacobs retired Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the fifth round in December 2019, but that win is not nearly as impressive since Chavez lost to Anderson Silva late last year. He also had to settle for a split decision victory over Gabriel Rosado too in November 2020, and Rosado has 14 losses.

That has some observers thinking that Josh Ryder has the advantage. Ryder doesn’t have near the same pedigree, but he has only been knocked out once and one of his five losses came by split decision.

Ryder was 15-0 before challenging Billy Joe Saunders for the British and Commonwealth middleweight belts, and he lost a unanimous decision. He won his next five matches before again losing a fight for the British middleweight title, but he won the IBF and WBA International middleweight belts in the span of a year.

His win over Bilal Akkawy in May 2019 earned him the interim WBA super middleweight belt, but he lost the title to Callum Smith in November 2019. Ryder has won his two most recent bouts, and he has been in the ring twice since the last time we saw Jacobs.
