The super middleweight bout between undefeated contender Christian Mbilli and Sergiy Derevyanchenko promises to pack a punch. One of the top active fighters in his weight class, Mbilli has won all 27 of his professional fights with 23 of them by stoppage. He faces his stiffest test yet against his Ukrainian opponent who has challenged three times for world middleweight titles. The 10-round fight is scheduled for Saturday, August 17 in Quebec, Canada.
With his spotless record and being 10 years younger than his opponent, Mbilli opened as a big -425 favorite on the early boxing betting line. Derevyanchenko has five setbacks in his career but he’s battled some of the top boxers in the business losing close decisions to Jermall Charlo and Jaime Munguia in the last few years. The Technician won his last bout in April with a unanimous decision of Vaughn Alexander. Derevyanchenko hit the board as a +310 betting underdog.

Christian Mbilli vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko Fight Preview
There are some boxers out there who have done a lot less than Mbilli yet are fighting for world titles. Mbilli ran his professional unbeaten streak to 27 straight dispatching Mark Heffron after just 40 seconds in his most recent outing to retain WBA and WBC regional titles. He has yet to fight for a world title, though this could be the breakthrough match of his career. The knock against Mbilli is that he hasn’t fought any name opponents instead tearing through a constant stream of fringe super middleweight contenders.
At least in those fights Mbilli did what was required to move up the ranks. He won every bout with a KO/win rate of better than 85 percent. And he’s been active with this being his fourth fight in less than a year. We don’t often see that, especially from ranked contenders, but it’s hard to say Mbilli is spent since his win over Heffron in May lasted less than a minute. In January he stopped Rohan Murdock in the sixth round and last September it took Mbilli less than two minutes into the fourth round to KO Demond Nicholson.
Mbilli has a few things working in his favor that make him a big favorite. First, he’s about 10 years younger than his opponent. And while Mbilli has more professional fights on his resume, Derevyanchenko had around 400 amateur bouts before turning pro. Mbilli is better technical fighter using his foot speed and quick jabs to keep opponents on the defensive. That’s a technique that could work well against an old-school boxer who likes to go toe-to-toe with his opponents.
With five losses in 20 pro fights, Derevyanchenko’s record is deceiving. He won his first 12 fights with 10 of them by stoppage setting up a match with former WBA middleweight champ Daniel Jacobs for the vacant IBF middleweight title. In the first of his three world championship fights Derevyanchenko suffered his first loss as a pro in a close split decision. In late 2019 Derevyanchenko stood with Gennady Golovkin for the duration in a duel for the vacant IBF and IBO middleweight titles dropping a close unanimous decision. He landed more total and power punches on Golovkin than anyone ever has. All five of Derevyanchenko’s setbacks were against fighters who are or were a world champion.

Bet Christian Mbilli vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko
From the standpoint of a casual boxing fan the odds appear a little funky. Sure Mbilli is a tremendous talent with loads of upside and a world title fight in his future. But you can’t overlook the seasoned veteran, who has never been KO’d in his career taking some of the best middleweights the distance. Derevyanchenko didn’t look like his brutal self beating Vaughn Alexander in April with his previous bout with Jaime Munguia apparently taking something out of him. And it’s not easy to recover from those blows when reach a certain age. I have to back Mbilli and since neither fighter has been stopped there’s a good chance this goes the distance.
