Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant Preview

There’s a lot to like about Caleb Plant coming into this fight. Although he isn’t nearly as experienced as Alvarez, he has a distinct advantage when it comes to his height and his reach. Plant is 6’1 compared to Alvarez’s 5’8, and his 74-inch reach is 3.5 inches longer than his opponent’s reach.

One of the biggest concerns about Plant is his seasoning and lack of top-tier opponents in the past. He was 15-0 before he fought his first quality opponent, beating Andrew Hernandez by unanimous decision. Plant followed that up with a unanimous decision victory over former super middleweight title contender Rogelio Medina before getting a title shot of his own.

Plant scored a unanimous decision win over Jose Uzcategui in January 2019 to win the IBF super middleweight belt. He defended the belt six months later with a third-round TKO of Mike Lee and notched a second title defense with a 10th round TKO of Vincent Feigenbutz seven months later. Plant’s win over Caleb Truax in January was his third title defense, and he won all 12 rounds on each judge’s scorecard.

Canelo Alvarez is the biggest star in boxing. Alvarez has fought 59 times and is just 31 years old, making him one of the most seasoned fighters ever, and he’s still in his prime.

It’s been a while since Alvarez fought a quality opponent though. He hasn’t faced anyone that can really test him since stepping into the ring with Gennady Golovkin twice and earning two very favorable decisions.

Alvarez is a four-division champion that has previously won titles at light middleweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight. He has largely fought at super middleweight recently though, taking down Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim, and Billy Joe Saunders since last December.

As always, the two fighters have looked to stir the pot before this week’s fight. Alvarez took offense to Plant using a swear word at him, and he told reporters that Plant had “crossed a line.” Never mind that Alvarez had used that same swear word towards Demetrius Andrade just a few months ago. There were a lot of acrimonious contract negotiations according to reports though, and that has certainly played a part.
