On August 31 he will be meeting another Olympic gold medal winner in Great Britain’s Luke Campbell. ESPN+ will present the world unification lightweight championship bout between Vasiliy Lomachenko (13-1, 10 knockouts) and Luke Campbell (20-2, 16 knockouts) at the O2 Arena in Greenwich on August 31, 2019. This championship fight is scheduled for 12 rounds. The lightweight title belts of the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association, and World Boxing Organization will be on the line. Lomachenko is the current WBA and WBO champion.
Fight Preview
In his relatively short professional career Vasiliy Lomachenko has already rocked world championships in three different divisions. He is eager for the shot at a unification title against a quality opponent such as Campbell. He is also looking forward to a return to the London area that he has grown quite fond of. As for Top Rank boxing they are beyond thrilled with such a quality matchup.
"Vasiliy Lomachenko is a unique talent who is going to take the United Kingdom by storm," Top Rank chairman Bob Arum said. "Luke Campbell is an excellent fighter, but Lomachenko is in a class of his own. The fans on that side of the pond have wanted Lomachenko to return ever since he turned pro. It's going to be a crazy, sold-out crowd at the O2 Arena, and I wouldn't be surprised if Lomachenko has the crowd's support."
Lomachenko has not even tried to hide his enthusiasm for this bout.
"This is a fight for history because my goal is to unify all of the belts in the lightweight division," said Lomachenko. "Luke Campbell is the next challenge for me on that journey. He is an excellent fighter who I remember well from the 2012 Olympics. He has a difficult style, and I cannot afford to overlook him.
"It is very special for me to fight in London. I visited last year, and the response from the people was overwhelming. They respect my fighting style and are passionate about boxing. I can't wait to put on a great show for everyone."
This will be the second world championship opportunity for Campbell. In September of 2017 he lost a split decision to Jorge Linares who was then a title belt holder. Campbell has not shied away from who and what he is up against and is excited about the biggest opportunity of his career.
"The best fighting the best; this is going to make one hell of a fight," said Campbell, who has posted three straight wins since his loss to Linares. "I am in this sport to be the best, and I am in this sport to become a world champion. He is ranked No. 1 pound-for-pound on the planet, so for me to fight a guy like that only encourages me more to be the best that I can be, and it is exactly the level that I want to be at."
