Fight Preview

Carl Frampton is the current World Boxing Organization interim featherweight champion and has a career record of 15-1 with 14 knockout wins for his career. Luke Jackson is 16-0 with seven knockout wins for his career. Jackson is best known for being a 2012 Olympian when he represented his native land of Australia.

Luke Jackson is simply unknown to most in the boxing world and has been derided for the lackluster opposition that he has face leading up to this championship fight. And in fact, many have called into question why Frampton is even bothering with a bout against a so-called nobody like Jackson. To many, this upcoming WBO interim featherweight title bout is a mere “exhibition” in which Frampton can prepare for an upcoming showdown against Oscar Valdez. Valdez is currently on the mend with a broken jaw but the two are expected to meet soon after he is declared to be 100 percent. In the meantime, Frampton does get a payday fight in his own backyard of Belfast, where he was born and still resides.

For his part Frampton has gone out of his way to praise Jackson and his Olympic pedigree. The champ further stated he expects a tough fight from Jackson and emphasized what an opportunity this is for the challenger. Frampton says he expects Jackson to show up in the best possible shape for the bout. He also said he will be fully prepared and that Windsor Park deserves his very best effort.

Jackson turned pro in 2013 and has faced relatively poor opposition in Australia where he still resides. In fact, most experts rate Jackson’s previous opponents as on a “C” level. There a quite the element of the unknown when it comes to Jackson. His one Olympic bout was a blowout loss to Quiang Liu of China. So, his apparent dominance of mid-grade boxers does not inspire a lot of confidence in gamblers. To add to the bad rap that Jackson gets is plenty of derision about the World Boxing Organization having him ranked as fifth best in the world. Simply put, nobody believes that at all.

To many Frampton’s hard sell and effusive praise of Jackson is the ultimate proof that this fight is not going to be much of a real contest. Frampton is coming off a win against the well known past champion Nonito Donaire and this matchup against Jackson pales in comparison as far as stature. Donaire is a four-time champ with a name brand cache. Jackson simply cannot compare on the marquee.
