Jaime Munguia Vs Patrick Allotey Boxing Picks

Jaime Munguia’s quest to surpass Canelo Alvarez as the greatest boxer in Mexico will continue on Saturday, September 14, when he faces Patrick Allotey at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Munguia has established himself as one of the top young boxers in the world at the age of 22, and he is expected to be a sizable favorite per the boxing betting odds when he faces Allotey. This bout will be for the WBO Junior Middleweight Title.

Munguia has yet to lose a fight, working his way up to the top at a torrid pace. He is 33-0 on the year with 26 knockouts, and he has held the WBO Junior Middleweight Title since knocking off Sadam Ali in Verona, New York 16 months ago. This will be his fifth title defense since claiming the strap.

Next Saturday will be Patrick Allotey’s first major title fight, and he will want to seize the opportunity. Allotey is 40-3 with 30 knockouts in his career, but he has scarcely fought outside his home country of Ghana. In the capital city of Accra, Allotey has been a star, winning all 39 of his fights. However, he has not fared well outside the country.

Allotey’s first match abroad was against Patrick Bogere in Stockholm. He won that fight by TKO, but he has not had good fortune since that victory. The Ghanaian lost by TKO to Charles Manyuchi in Zambia the following year, and his next fight saw him travel to America to be knocked out in the second round by Patrick Teixeira. His last fight outside Ghana was against Kanat Islam in Kazahhstan, and he lost that bout by unanimous decision.

Fight Preview

This match will be a special one for Munguia. He is fighting on Mexican Independence Day and is starting to establish himself as the next preeminent boxer from Mexico. Munguia is very patriotic and will want to put his best foot forward, especially after the shakiest moment of his career. He only beat Dennis Hogan by split decision in April, in what was his narrowest win yet.

Munguia has been hard at work preparing, and he described his training camp routine as such: "For this camp, we've been working on keeping my hands up, moving my waist and using lateral movement. That's what we have been practicing every day with my new trainer Erik Morales. Erik and I had known each other from before, but I never thought that I'd be training with him. Things happen for a reason, and I think it's for the best."

"Erik and I have a good relationship, and we get along well. We're happy when we're working with each other as I have been with my father and other trainers as well. Erik brings a lot of intelligence to camp. He knows what to do in the ring. He knows how to work on defense, and he gives me a lot of advice regarding what to do in a fight. It comes with his experience, and of course I execute what he says when I am in the ring. It has been really good."

Allotey has not fought since Christmas Eve of last year. He was scheduled to take on Eric Kapia on August 10, but the fight was called off the day of the bout. His camp immediately announced that he would face Munguia in five weeks, so the situation feels a little weird.

He knows that he has his work cut out for him and indicated so in his comments, saying: “As a boxer you are always battle ready though I must admit that this one the scheduling and everything came too early. I’m prepared, though not like the previous bouts. But not to worry, I am going to make Ghana proud.”

Boxing Betting Tips

It’s hard to imagine Munguia losing this fight. It feels like Allotey was hand-picked largely due to his record, but he doesn’t have a great record against elite fighters. I think Munguia will win by TKO.
