Thunder Snow Kentucky Derby Betting OddsKentucky Derby Betting: Many believed that Magnum Moon would be the favorite coming into the Kentucky Derby. He is undefeated this year with some impressive victories to his name. Magnum Moon won his maiden race at Gulfstream Park by 4.5 lengths and followed that up with a two-length win at Tampa Bay Downs.

Where he really made a name for himself was at Oaklawn Park. He wasn’t considered the favorite at the Rebel Stakes, but he bested the heavily favored Solomini by 3.5 lengths there. A month later, he defeated Solomini and Combatant to win the Arkansas Derby by four lengths.

The Kentucky Derby will go to post on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 6:34 p.m. ET at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Catch the Kentucky Derby live on NBC.

Magnum Moon was sired by Malibu Moon and his dam was Dazzling Song. Malibu Moon never got the chance to race in a big derby after suffering an injury as a two-year-old, but he has been a successful sire. His foal Orb won the 2013 Kentucky Derby, and he is also the sire to two Eclipse Award winners.

His trainer at the Kentucky Derby will be Todd Pletcher. Pletcher has seen 48 horses run in this race, but he has not had much success. He has only had two horses win the Kentucky Derby, Super Saver in 2010 and last year’s winner Always Dreaming.

The jockey for Magnum Moon will be Luis Saez. This will be Saez’s sixth ride at the Kentucky Derby, and he is looking for his first success. His best finish came in 2016 when he rode Brody’s Cause to seventh place.

Why Magnum Moon Will Win the Kentucky Derby

Like Justify, Magnum Moon was able to go wire to wire to win a major race. He never trailed at the Arkansas Derby, setting the pace for the entire run. That gives him a good shot to knock off the favorite as he too is a front-runner.

Being able to beat deep fields is another reason to like Magnum Moon. He proved he could win at three different tracks and ran against eight other horses in Arkansas.

Magnum Moon has also posted some great workouts. He ran four furlongs in 48.3 seconds the week before the Arkansas Derby and a similar performance could cause his odds to drop before the Kentucky Derby.

Why Magnum Moon Won't Win the Kentucky Derby

The main concern with Magnum Moon are his numbers. His Beyer Speed Rating has never been better than 100 and it typically takes at least a 105 to win the Kentucky Derby. His speed puts him in the middle of the pack in this race.

The Final Verdict

I wouldn’t like Magnum Moon if he was the favorite, but he’s worth a shot at +825. Going 4-4 is nothing to sneeze at and two big wins is enough to give me some confidence in his chances.
