Arabian Knight for trainer Bob Baffert is the favorite in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic and will break from the No. 12 post. Baffert has won the Classic a total of four times, all with 3-year olds and Arabian Knight is a 3-year old. The Breeders’ Cup Classic will not have the field it could have had, as Arcangelo was scratched on Tuesday and last week the race lost Kentucky Derby winner Mage. Also out of the race is Geaux Rocket Ride who got hurt in a workout. White Abarrio is the co-second choice in the betting odds along with Ushba Tesoro. White Abarrio is trained by Rick Dutrow who won the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Saint Liam. This will be the first Breeders’ Cup race for Dutrow who has returned after serving a 10-year suspension.

The Breeders' Cup continues to grow and add races to its repertoire on an annual basis. This event was once just four races, but it has grown to include as many as 14 races over two full days of racing in any given year. The 2023 Breeders’ Cup will feature 14 races, five of which are held on Friday, and the remaining nine of which will encompass the best day of racing of the year on Saturday.

It’s a great two days as the first day features two-year-old horses that will be competing for the Triple Crown the following year. This will be the first time that these horses are seen by millions, and fortunes will be won or lost. The second day will feature the best of the best, although some owners are reticent to run their horses and risk injury if they already won a Triple Crown event.

Most Breeders’ Cup Wins by Jockey

JOCKEY VICTORIES
Mike Smith 27
John R. Velazquez 19
Irad Ortiz Jr. 17
Jerry Bailey 15
Joel Rosario 15
Frankie Dettori 14
Garrett K. Gomez 13

Unlike other horse racing records that are largely dominated by the old guard, the Breeders’ Cup records are all held by relative newcomers since these events are still somewhat new. Mike Smith has been the king of the Breeders’ Cup for the jockeys, winning an absurd 27 titles during his distinguished career. John Velazquez is the second-most successful jockey in the event’s history.

Most Breeders’ Cup Wins by Trainer

TRAINER VICTORIES
D. Wayne Lukas 20
Bob Baffert 18
Aidan O’Brien and Chad Brown 16
Todd Pletcher 14

D. Wayne Lukas has been one of the most successful horse racing trainers of the modern era. Lukas’ horses have claimed first place two more times than rival Bob Baffert, but Baffert had two horses win Breeders’ Cup races in 2022. Baffert has been the trainer of two Triple Crown winners in the last decade, and he is looking to surpass Lukas in this category too.

Baffert is 68 years old, but he is still going strong. He can boast that he produced the two most recent Triple Crown winners in American Pharoah and Justify, and that has led to his star rising once more.
