The first major horse race of the year is the prestigious Dubai World Cup. Last year’s champion Ushba Tesoro is back to defend as the betting favorite in the 12-horse field. It was the second win at this race for a Japanese horse and first since Victoire Pisa in 2011. Just last month Ushba Tesora placed second at the Saudi Cup to Dubai World Cup entrant Senor Buscador.

Dubai World Cup Overview
Held annually since 1996, the Dubai World Cup is the ninth and final race of the day for the celebration known as Dubai World Cup Night. The race is held on the last Saturday in March and has a purse of $12 million making it one of the richest horse races in the world. The Dubai World Cup is comprised of 2000 meters, which is the equivalent of 10 furlongs, and is open to Northern Hemisphere thoroughbreds aged three and up and for Southern Hemisphere thoroughbreds aged four and older. The surface is dirt and with a left-handed track.
Meydan Racecourse
The Meydan Racecourse was opened in 2010 and has a seating capacity of 60,000. The venue is part of the Meydan Marina. Also serving as a major attraction in the area is the fabulous five-star hotel, The Meydan. Two race tracks and the grandstand are attached to The Meydan, making it one of the most unique luxury resorts on Earth. The Meydan Racecourse holds some of the top racing events in the world each year and is one of the most popular destinations for fans and insiders of the sport anywhere. The racecourse has also attracted some of the top entertainers in the world hosting concerts by Elton John, Santana, Kylie Minogue, Janet Jackson and Sia.
Favorites to Win Dubai World Cup
Ushba Tesoro 5/2
After winning last year the Japanese thoroughbred tops the odds board in advance of the 2024 Dubai World Cup. He will have to overcome nemesis Senor Buscador, however, and that’s a challenge since Ushba Tesoro lost a close one at the Saudi Cup last month. Known as a closer, Ushba Tesoro capitalized on a fast pace last year overcoming the field. And though he placed in Riyadh, Ushba Tesoro rallied in another fast-paced field only fall by a head.
Derma Sotogake 3/1
A shocking win in the 2023 UAE Derby and runner-up performance in the Breeder’s Cup Classic puts Derma Sotogake near the top of the odds board. Another Japanese horse takes the lead from compatriot Ushba Tesoro.
Kabirkhan 5/1
Strong blood lines have certainly helped Kabirkhan. Sired by California Chrome, who won the World Cup in 2016 during his Hall of Fame career, Kabirkhan hasn’t been too shabby on his own. He’s won 10 of 11 races, including the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge last month.
Senor Buscador 13/2
Senor Buscador ran second in two races prior to his breakthrough in the Saudi Cup, where he beat favorite Ushba Tesora by a head. That race played to his one-turn strength where the World Cup’s conditions likely won’t.
Laurel River 14/1
A winner in his last three starts with only the 2022 Pat O’Brien a graded (G2) race. Laurel River earned a spot in that fall’s Breeder’s Cup Dirt Mile only to be scratched. He’s back and expected to be the pacesetter, though the distance is extreme.
