2020 Dubai World Cup Overview

Held annually since 1996, the Dubai World Cup is the ninth and final race of the day for the celebration known as Dubai World Cup Night. The race is held on the last Saturday in March and has a purse of $12 million to make it the richest horse race in the world.  The Dubai World Cup is comprised of 2000 meters which is the equivalent of 10 furlongs. The surface is dirt and with a left-handed track. Thunder Snow is the two-time defending champion but not expected to run in 2020.

Meydan Racecourse

The Meydan Racecourse was opened in 2010 and has a seating capacity of 60,000. The racecourse is part of the Meydan Marina. Also serving as a major attraction in the area is the fabulous five-star hotel, The Meydan. Two race tracks and the grandstand are attached to The Meydan making it one of the most unique luxury resorts on Earth.  The Meydan Racecourse holds some of the top racing events in the world each year and is one of the most popular destinations for fans and insiders of the sport anywhere.

Tacitus is best remembered as a top contender for the 2019 Kentucky Derby following wins in the grade two Tampa Bay Derby and the grade two Wood Memorial. In the Kentucky Derby however, Tacitus finished in third place with Country House winning with Code of Honor second. In his last race on February 29, 2020, Tacitus finished fifth at the Saudi Cup. William I. Mott is the Trainer for Tacitus, a four-year-old colt.

Salem bin Ghadayer is the trainer for a five-year-old horse named Gronkowski, who is best remembered for finishing in second place at the 2018 Belmont Stakes. Gronkowski has never won a graded race but did win four races in a row that led up to his run at the Belmont Stakes. In his last time out, Gronkowski finished a disappointing 10th at the Saudi Cup on February 29, 2020.

North America

Eight years of age may be old in horse racing but North America is up to the job. Trainer Satish Seemar will lead North America to the starting gate for the Dubai World Cup after a bad run at the Saudi Cup on February 29, 2020 where he finished 13th. However North America was in better form before that with a third-place finish at the grade two Al Maktoum Challenge Round I on January 9, 2020. Additionally, North America won a couple of grade two races last year.

Mucho Gusto

Four-year-old Mucho Gusto is trained by Bob Baffert, which will be an immediate attraction to gamblers familiar with Baffert’s Hall of Fame status. Mucho Gusto finished fourth at the Saudi Cup on February 29, 2020 which followed a win at the grade one Pegasus World Cup that was held on January 25, 2020.

War Story

Elizabeth L Dobles trains the eight-year-old gelding War Story, who finished third to Mucho Gusto in the grade one Pegasus World Cup on January 25, 2020. Prior to that, War Story was the winner of the grade three Harland Holiday on December 14, 2019.
