2022 FIFA World Cup Germany Odds and Preview

2022 FIFA World Cup Germany Betting Odds

This is the weakest we have seen Germany in quite some time. Germany was ranked 12th in the FIFA Rankings ahead of the draw for the 2022 World Cup, leading to the country being a Pot 2 team. That meant the group they were drawn into would likely be the Group of Death, and that’s exactly what happened when it was revealed that Germany would be in the same group as Spain. Still, despite their recent struggles, Germany is one of the six teams with odds to win the World Cup of less than 10-1.

Although Germany was a Pot 2 team, they had a relatively easy qualifying group for the World Cup and put together one of the most dominant performances. Germany lost its second home match against North Macedonia, but they won their other nine matches by an aggregate score of 35-2. Since Germany won its group by nine points, it was one of the first European teams to qualify to play in Qatar.

Recent Form

Germany has been up and down over the last two years. The Germans were blasted 6-0 by Spain in Seville in Nations League play in November 2020. They went 1-1-1 in Group Stage play during Euro 2020, as they were placed in the Group of Death. Germany was able to defeat Portugal 4-2 in Munich, but they fell to France and could only muster a draw against Hungary. They went on to lose to England 2-0 in the Round of 16, its worst performance in the competition since 2004.

The Germans are 2-4-0 in their six matches they have played so far this year. They beat Israel 2-0 in a friendly in March, but they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Germany was placed in a very difficult Nations League group, and they drew Italy, England, and Hungary in their first three matches. They were dominant in their most recent match against Italy though, taking a 5-0 lead before letting in two late goals.

Roster

There are four elite goal scorers on the roster for Germany. Thomas Muller is the elder statesman of the group at 33, and he has notched 44 goals in 116 matches for the national team. Timo Werner and Serge Gnabry have 24 and 20 goals for Germany respectively, while Leroy Sane has netted 11 goals for his country.

This is an extremely talented midfield too. Ilkay Gundogan is finally getting the recognition he deserves for club and country, and he might be the designated penalty taker in Qatar. Marco Reus, Leon Gortezka, and Kai Havertz have all shown an ability to create from the midfield, and there is plenty of depth too. Joshua Kimmich, Julian Brandt, and Julian Draxler are all solid options, so head coach Hansi Flick will have a hard time paring down the roster.

If there is a weakness for Germany, it’s the back line. Matthias Ginter, Antonio Rudiger, and Niklas Sule all have at least 40 caps, but there isn’t another defender with more than 20 caps. Thilo Kehrer and Jonathan Tah have been solid when asked to suit up in the national colors, and Red Bull Leipzig have three defenders with recent call-ups in David Raum, Benjamin Henrichs, and Lukas Klostermann.

Manuel Neuer is the captain of Germany, and he still figures to be the starting goalkeeper. Neuer returned from a devastating injury a few years ago, and he hasn’t missed a beat in replacing Philipp Lahm as captain of both Germany and Bayern Munich. Marc-Andre ter Stegen would start for most other countries, but he is relegated to a back-up role for the national team.

Prediction

This is a very difficult group for Germany. Spain obliterated Germany less than two years ago, and both Japan and Costa Rica have proven they can be giant killers at the World Cup. There is a decent chance that the Germans don’t make it out of the Group Stage, but Germany will be a serious threat to win the World Cup if they can get to the knockout rounds.
