EURO 2020 Portugal vs. France Betting Odds

There is plenty of intrigue heading into the last day of play in Group F. Hungary’s draw to France means that all four teams can conceivably qualify for the knockout rounds. Only one point separates the three heavyweights in the group, so France, Germany, and Portugal could all still win Group F. France currently has a one-point edge over the other two teams, and Les Bleus know the importance of finishing atop this group. The winner of Group F will play a third-place team from either Group A, Group B, or Group C, but the runner-up in this group will likely face England in London in the Round of 16.

Odds Analysis

Although Germany was seen as the most likely heavyweight to falter in this group, it looks like Portugal will fill that role. The Portuguese beat Hungary 3-0 in their first match, but that score line was incredibly deceiving. All three of Portugal’s goals came in the 84th minute or later, as Hungary largely held them at bay.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring against Germany, but the Germans responded by scoring four goals in the next 25 minutes. Portugal’s shoddy back line looked old and slow, and Germany could have easily scored a few more goals in this match. That’s something that must be addressed before facing France.

France looked solid, but not great, in their opening win over Germany. Their lone goal was an own goal, yet they deserved to win the match with their play. However, they did not look sharp against Hungary. They fell behind 1-0 just before half and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Given their talent on the attack, it’s a bit odd that France has only scored one goal. Antoine Griezmann has the lone goal for Les Bleus, while Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud, and Kylian Mbappe have yet to register goals. Benzema and Mbappe each had goals against Germany that were called back due to offsides, so this team might be primed for a breakthrough.

We’ve seen Ronaldo score three goals through two matches, and the legendary player looks set to break the record for goals scored at international competitions. He has been incredible over the course of his career, but his presence has hurt the development of Bruno Fernandes, Joao Felix, and others. Fernandes and Felix have had to play second fiddle, and they haven’t looked nearly as sharp as they do with their club teams.

Matchup to Watch

Portugal’s back line had a very difficult time stopping Germany a few days ago. Pepe looked slow and Ruben Dias really struggled, as Germany routinely had players running through this defense. That allowed the Germans to dominate the action, and France has even more offensive talent.

We saw Mbappe’s speed on full display against Germany, and he has the potential to bag a brace or even a hat trick against this defense. Mbappe can outrace anyone to the ball, and he must be salivating at the prospect of facing Portugal after what we saw from this team.

Both teams would likely advance to the knockout rounds with a draw, but France is likely to open things up. The French are the defending World Cup champions and know that an early matchup with England would be detrimental to their hopes of winning a second straight major tournament. That could lead to a shock early exit for Portugal.

EURO 2020 Odds: France 2, Portugal 0
