Odds Analysis

Although six or seven countries have a great shot of winning Euro 2020, France is seen as the overall favorite after winning the last World Cup. There is talent all over the pitch, and Les Bleus still have a lot of stars in the prime of their careers.

While Manchester United fans might feel ambivalent about Paul Pogba, he has been superb in the national colors. He is one of the leaders in the midfield with 10 goals in 80 appearances, and he is free to join in on the attack whenever he wants to press an advantage.

That’s because N’Golo Kante remains one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. Kante has only scored two goals for the national team, but he was credited as one of the main reasons for the team’s success in Russia by Pogba and others. He is one of the glue guys whose hard work is often overlooked because he isn’t flashy, yet he is instrumental to this team’s success.

Although Karim Benzema will likely be unavailable after suffering a knee knock against Bulgaria in France’s last friendly, this attack isn’t hurting for options. Olivier Giroud remains something of a mystical figure, seemingly lifting Les Bleus when they need him the most. Antoine Griezmann is the reliable option for France, while Kylian Mbappe is looking to make an even bigger name for himself at this tournament.

This defense would certainly be better with Aymeric Laporte, but it speaks to its quality that he was continually overlooked for selection. Benjamin Pavard might be the best young center back in the world, and Presnel Kimpembe, Raphael Varane, and Clement Lenglet are very talented youngsters.

Four-time World Cup champion Germany is something of an enigma coming into Euro 2020. This will be Joachim Low’s swan song as manager, and it doesn’t seem like he is getting the most out of this roster. They blasted Latvia in their last friendly before the Euros started, but they drew Denmark and lost at home to North Macedonia in their two matches before that win.

The midfield and forwards have the potential to be productive once more. Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan, Leon Goretzka, Toni Kroos, and Serge Gnabry all figure to contribute, and both Thomas Muller and Timo Werner are world-class talents up top.

Matchup to Watch

Germany’s defense might get picked apart by France. There are some talented players, but there aren’t players that you can feel extremely confident about other than Mats Hummels and maybe Emre Can. Captain Manuel Neuer was once the undisputed best goalkeeper in the world, but he has lost something at the age of 35.

We might see Germany implode in this match. They have not performed well on the international stage over the last six months, and they probably should have parted ways with Low. This has the potential to be a runaway win for France.

EURO 2020 Odds: France 3, Germany 1
