New York Red Bulls at Los Angeles FC Match Preview

Los Angeles FC are the best team in the MLS by a mile. LAFC are lapping the field in the race for the Supporters Shield, and the club is probably going to go down as the best in the history of the MLS. There is an off chance they finish the year with more than 100 goals, and their +38 goal differential is just absurd. They are heavy favorites per the MLS betting odds entering their match with the New York Red Bulls this weekend.

Odds Analysis

The New York Red Bulls are currently in third place in the Eastern Conference, but they need to pick up as many results as they can down the stretch. They are just five points clear of Toronto for a spot in the postseason, and the Red Bulls have just nine games remaining this campaign.

NYRB are 3-5-3 on the road, but they did pick up a win in their last road game a few weeks ago and are coming off a win last weekend too. They were able to top Toronto FC 2-0 thanks to an own goal and a cap from Kemar Lawrence in extra time.

LAFC have lost just three matches all season long. Their last loss stung as it came in the El Trafico rivalry, but they have shrugged that off with wins in their last two games.

They beat defending MLS Cup champions Atlanta United 4-3 in a thriller by scoring four goals in the span of 12 minutes late in the first half, and they secured a 2-0 road win over New England last week.

Key Absences

Red Bulls midfielder Florian Valot is out for the rest of the season after tearing his ACL for the second straight campaign back in March, and teammate Alex Muyl is questionable to play due to a groin injury.

Midfielder Javi Perez went down with a torn ACL back in May, and defender Mohamed El-Munir will likely miss some more time after undergoing facial surgery a few weeks ago. Midfielder Alejandro Guido is questionable with a strained quad, and goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega has a sprained shoulder and is questionable too.

Player to Watch

I’m a broken record when I talk about LAFC at this point, but the play of Carlos Vela has been something else this season. Vela has notched 22 goals in 22 games, and he is a virtual shoo-in to be named league MVP at season’s end. He is integral to everything Bob Bradley wants to do with LAFC, and he links up beautifully with Diego Rossi and Adama Diomande. Vela’s 13 assists are tied for the league lead.

Free Soccer Betting Pick

To beat LAFC you have to be able to defend well. Of their three losses, two have come by scorelines of 1-0, so the blueprint is to stay behind the ball and counter when they are too far forward.

The Red Bulls have a back line that can counter effectively with Lawrence on the wing, but I don’t think they are strong enough in defense to hold LAFC at bay. This defense is not as good as it was in 2018, and LAFC will take advantage. Vela will keep his goal per game average alive in a win for the hosts.

Major League Soccer Odds: Los Angeles FC 3, New York Red Bulls 1
