Los Angeles Galaxy at DC United Match Preview

The Los Angeles Galaxy are ready to start playing at home again after three straight abysmal performances away from home. The Galaxy’s road woes began in late June when they lost 3-0 to San Jose, and they have only been exacerbated in recent weeks. They were hammered 4-0 by Portland two weeks ago and Atlanta United dealt them a 3-0 beatdown last week. That has seen the Galaxy drop to fifth place in the Western Conference and they will look to stop the bleeding when they travel to the nation’s capital to take on DC United.

Don't miss the Major League Soccer action from Audi Field in Washington, DC at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 11, 2019. Catch every moment of the match live on FS1.

Odds Analysis

On Tuesday, news broke that Wayne Rooney would leave DC United at the end of the season. Rooney has been incredible since coming over from England and gave the club a spark that lifted them from the dregs of the Eastern Conference to become a playoff team in 2018, and he has been the best player on DC United so far this year. The legendary Rooney will serve as a player-manager for Championship side Derby County on his return to England.

It hasn’t been a great last few months for DC United and the news that Rooney’s time is coming to an end doesn’t help. The club has won just two of its last 13 matches, and DC United were hammered 5-1 by Philadelphia last week. Junior Moreno was shown a straight red card in the 40th minute and the rout was on from there.

The good news for LA is a number of their best players will be back after missing last week’s game. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Efrain Alvarez, and Diego Polenta were suspended for the match against Atlanta, and those three players will have the benefit of added rest coming into this game.

The Galaxy are 4-6-1 on the road this season, and they were one of the better road teams in the league prior to their last three outings.

Key Absences

Midfielder Russell Canouse is still recovering from a collapsed lung and will miss this match, and fellow midfielder Chris Durkin has been ruled out for the next three weeks due to a severely sprained ankle. Defender Oniel Fisher is still sidelined, and midfielder Junior Moreno will be suspended after last week’s red card.

Midfielder Romain Alessandrini is the only definite absence for the Galaxy, as they are getting healthy at the right time. Midfielders Chris Pontius and Juninho are both questionable.

Player to Watch

The return of Ibrahimovic is sure to give the Galaxy a boost. Ibra has been their best weapon since coming over at the start of the 2018 season, and he shows up in a big way in nationally televised matches. He lifted the Galaxy to an upset win over Los Angeles FC a few weeks ago, and he will be out to steal the spotlight once again. Ibra has notched 16 goals this season.

Winning on the road in the MLS is tougher than it is in other leagues. The vast size of the United States makes for long treks and going from one coast to another is not easy. However, the prolonged poor play from DC United has me backing the visitors in this one. Rooney’s news could fracture a team that has underachieved over the last few months.

Major League Soccer Odds: Los Angeles Galaxy 2, DC United 1
