Odds Analysis

Dustin Johnson +1407

It is rare when there is value on a favorite, but that is the case this week with Johnson. He has two wins this season and he leads the PGA Tour in a number of categories. He has five top 15 finishes in his career at the Open. It is also worth noting that eight of the last 11 Open champions were 35 years old or older.

Rickie Fowler +1621

I am going out on a limb this week and picking Rickie as one of my top choices. I know that he always fall short in majors, but he played last week’s Scottish Open and played well and I expect him to contend this week and have a chance to win.

Justin Rose +1621

Rose has two wins this season and he almost always finishes in the top 10. He is second in the field in scoring behind Johnson. I am a bit concerned though that he has never really done that well in the Open. There is no question that Rose could win this week, but I am looking elsewhere.

Rory McIlroy +1621

Rory has been inconsistent this season with a win at Bay Hill and a missed cut at Shinnecock. Which Rory will show up this week? I have no idea, so I will simply avoid taking him.

Jordan Spieth +2056

I still want no part of Spieth until he figures things out. His putting has been poor all season and it is really hard to win when you don’t putt well.

Tommy Fleetwood +2262

I like Fleetwood this week as one of my top choices. He has done well in the past at Carnoustie and he shows no fear against the top players in the world.

Alex Noren +3270

I think Noren has a lot of value at these odds. He won the Open de France this year and he won on the links at the Scottish Open two years ago. He tied for 6th in last year’s Open at Royal Birkdale. It could be a great week for Noren.

Paul Casey +3881

Is this finally the year that Casey wins a major? He is up to No. 12 in the world rankings and we know that experience matters in the Open. He tied for 11th at Birkdale last year.

Tyrell Hatton +4550

You have to give Hatton a big chance, as he loves playing on the links. He has won the last two Alfred Dunhill Links Championships and he almost always plays well in Scotland. He is a live longshot this week.

Course: Carnoustie will be hosting the Open Championship for the 8th time. The most recent was in 2007 when Padraig Harrington won a playoff against Sergio Garcia. It is also the site of the famous Jean Van de Velde meltdown where he ended up with a 7 on the 18th hole to blow his victory. He ended up losing in a three-way playoff. Carnoustie is a links course with pot bunkers, fescue-lined fairways and tough hazards. The course measures 7,402 yards and is a par 71. In the last two Open Championships at Carnoustie only 19 players have finished under par.
