Golf Open Championship Matchups Lines

The best players in the world are in Scotland this week for the Open Championship. The scores will not be very good this week, as the tournament is being held at Carnoustie, so picking matchups will be all about finding players who can avoid trouble and who are good at scrambling. We are coming off a 3-2 week with the matchups at the John Deere Classic and a 3-1 week with the matchups at the Scottish Open. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s Open Championship.

Open Championship Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Carnoustie is simply a beast of a course. It definitely lives up to its nickname of “car-nasty.” The winning score when the Open was held on this course in 1999 was 6 over par. Padraig Harrington did shoot 7-under par when the Open was held at Carnoustie in 2007, but only 19 players finished under par. This year’s course is dry, perhaps drier than it has ever been so it is going to play long. The players who hit the ball a ton are going to have an advantage, but there are so many pot bunkers and hazards that accuracy is also important and scrambling is the No. 1 stat to consider this week. Harrington led the field in scrambling when he won in 2007.

Dustin Johnson -115 vs. Rory McIlroy

D.J. should be able to take advantage of the hard and fast fairways more than any other player. He is also an excellent scrambler and those skills will be needed this week. Rory always seems to have one bad round that takes him out of contention. I will take Johnson in this matchup.

Tommy Fleetwood +160 vs. Rory McIlroy

This is simply a price play, as I have no clue why Rory is such a big favorite. Fleetwood owns the course record at Carnousite and he has played well previously in the Dunhill Links.

Alexander Noren +104 vs. Tiger Woods

This is another price that I don’t get, as Noren is simply the better player. He won the Open de France and he has three top 20 finishes at the Dunhill Links. Maybe Tiger will win again, but we have yet to see him in serious contention.

Branden Grace -119 vs. Marc Leishman

Grace loves to play on hard, fast tracks. He won the 2012 Dunhill Links. Leishman is really not having the season he had a year ago and I don’t see it turning around in Scotland.
