Somehow, the Clay Helton era is still alive at USC. Helton has been on the hot seat since the Trojans went 5-7 in 2018, but the administration has yet to make a move. The unluckiest team in college football in 2020 was Penn State. The Nittany Lions started the season 0-5, and they should have won two or three of those games. They outgained Indiana by 277 yards in their season opener, but they lost by a point in overtime. After a deserved loss to Ohio State, Penn State lost to Maryland despite outgaining them due to three turnovers, and the Nittany Lions lost to Nebraska the following week although they outgained the Cornhuskers by over 200 yards.... 

Oregon has won back-to-back Pac 12 titles, but the Ducks shouldn’t have been in the Pac 12 Championship Game last year. The Ducks went 3-2 in conference play, yet they ended up replacing Washington after the Huskies had too many COVID cases to field a team against USC. Mario Cristobal’s team took full advantage of the rare opportunity to beat the Trojans and earn a New Year’s Six Bowl bid where some of the issues we saw during the season were exposed by Iowa State in the Fiesta Bowl.... 

This could be the year the Oklahoma Sooners finally return to the mountaintop in college football, or at least win a game in the College Football Playoff. Oklahoma took its lumps last season with Spencer Rattler, but the 2021 Heisman Trophy favorite thrived in Lincoln Riley’s offense by the end of the year. After consecutive losses to Kansas State and Iowa State in their first two FBS games, this offense turned it on, and the defense improved dramatically from week to week. This offense will alm... 

The Ohio State Buckeyes have ruled the Big Ten with an iron fist the last four years. They have won four consecutive Big Ten titles, beating Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game in 2017 and 2019 and Northwestern in the title game in 2018 and 2020. Once again, their toughest tests in the conference are likely to be in the East Division as a team from the West Division has not won the Big Ten since the conference was divided into its current format before the 2014 season.... 

There’s little doubt that Notre Dame will take a step back in 2021. The only question is how much of a step back the Irish take this season. The Fighting Irish have won at least 10 games in each of the last four years, but they will have to replace a lot of their offense including star quarterback Ian Book. That led to them dipping into the transfer portal several times this offseason, and it’s hard to know just how well they will adapt to Brian Kelly’s system....
