Week 6 NCAAF Picks – Notre Dame at Virginia Tech Football Odds

Week 6 NCAAF Picks

Week six includes what could be one of the top games all season thus far as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are flashing championship form since changing quarterbacks while the Virginia Tech Hokies got back on track in a most impressive win last week at Duke after a humiliating loss at Old Dominion two weeks ago that they may never totally live down. Virginia Tech will host Notre Dame in a matchup of teams that could be evenly matched. And while Notre Dame may have the advantage at quarterback the environment at Lane Stadium will be over the top.

This matchup in Week 6 will take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at 8 p.m. ET at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia. ABC is providing the telecast of this game.

Odds Analysis

Notre Dame is one of the most public teams on the board and will certainly bring in plenty of public money as a highly ranked undefeated team that now has the added element of a dynamic signal caller. The public may still be lukewarm on Virginia Tech because of the debacle at Old Dominion. But last week’s performance combined with the Lane Stadium crowd may attract some bargain hunters.

Recent Form

Virginia Tech has a record of 3-1 straight up and against the spread with a 2-2 split on totals. The Hokies are coming off a 31-14 win and payout at what was an undefeated Duke team as 6.5-point road dogs.

Notre Dame is 5-0 straight up and 3-2 against the spread with three of their five games going under the total. The Irish are coming off a devastating 38-17 home win and payout over what was an undefeated Stanford team which has captured the attention of everyone.

Current Metrics

Virginia Tech ranks 28th in the country for total offense and is well balanced between the run and the pass. However, the usually stout Hokies defense has slumped top rank 78th overall and 123rd against the pass.

Although Notre Dame ranks 47th in the country for total offense they are on a dramatic upswing from the past two weeks. Defensively the Irish have impressed with a ranking of 27th in the country for points allowed.

Top Players

Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book took over a sluggish Fighting Irish attack two weeks ago and has emerged as a sensation. Book has a 181.2 quarterback rating with a 7/0 touchdown to interception ratio and has completed 70% of his passes. Book has proven to be a significant upgrade from previous starting QB Brandon Wimbush. Keeping defenses honest is Irish running back Tony Jones Jr, who is averaging 5.4 yards per carry with three touchdowns.

For Virginia Tech quarterback Ryan Willis has had to come off the bench due to a season ending injury to Josh Jackson. Willis has not caused any drop-in production with a 168.2 QB rating and 4/0 touchdown to interception ratio. Willis is averaging an impressive 10.14 yards per attempt. Running back Steven Peoples will keep the Irish off balance with his 5.5 yards per carry with five touchdowns

Key Trends

Notre Dame has covered four of their last six as road favorites with six of their last eight as road chalks going over the total. The Hokies have paid in eight of their last 11 as home pups with six of their last nine in that role going under the total.

Free ATS Pick

Notre Dame has become a new team with Ian Book. But Virginia Tech offers exceptional value as a home dog. Too much public money will be flowing to the Irish.

Ian Book will certainly garner plenty of live betting action for Notre Dame. But Book is yet to face an environment like the one he will encounter Saturday night. Beyond that Tech will forever make up for the Old Dominion debacle with a win over Notre Dame. Have your account ready for continuous betting on this one!
