Week 3 NCAAF Picks – Georgia State at Memphis Football Odds

Week 3 NCAAF Picks

Week three offers a college football Friday night appetizer between a program that is just in its sixth season of existence at the 1A level going up against a Group of Five program desperate for an escape to the Big Time of Power Five. The Memphis Tigers are coming off four straight bowl seasons and a ten-win season for the second time in four years. Memphis has shown tremendous improvement and is occasionally mentioned as a program that may be promoted to the Big 12 or another Power Five League. The Georgia State Panthers are coming off the second bowl season in their history and simply want to develop consistency as a Group of Five program. Memphis will host Georgia State Friday night.

Kickoff for this regular season Week 3 game is set for Friday, September 14, 2018, at 7 p.m. ET at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. TV coverage is on ESPN.

Odds Analysis

Memphis is an understandable big home chalk. Georgia State is still an “expansion team” in the minds of many and unknown to most members of the general gambling public. Memphis on the other hand has caught attention over the past few years as a program that was almost invited into the Big 12 and also as a big-time winner at their level.

Recent Form

Georgia State is 1-1 straight up and against the spread. The Panthers are coming off a 41-7 loss at North Carolina State as 25-point dogs. Georgia State was outgained 541-349 last week.

Memphis is 1-1 straight up and against the spread and is coming off a tough 22-21 loss at Navy last week. The Tigers outgained the Midshipmen 378-316 and blew a 21-9 fourth quarter lead for an exceptionally painful defeat against a quality program.

Georgia State Key Trends

Georgia State has been a subpar betting value on the road with just three payouts in their last eight away games. Four of the Panthers last six away games went under the total. But as a road dog the Panthers have been a very strong play with 14 payouts in their last 18 games getting points on the road. Additionally, 10 of their last 13 games as road dogs went under the total.

At home Memphis has been a solid wagering value with six payouts in their last ten games at the Liberty Bowl. The Tigers have also gone over the total in 10 of their last 12 home games. Memphis has covered the number in six of their last nine as a home favorite of 10 or more points. The Tigers have gone over the total in their last six games as double-digit home chalks.

Mike Norvell

Mike Norvell is one of the hot young coaching prospects in college football and has a career record of 19-9 at Memphis. He arrived after Justin Fuente departed for Virginia Tech which followed his putting the Tigers program back on the map with one of the great coaching jobs in recent memory. Norvell arrived from Arizona State where he was a highly acclaimed offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. Norvell and Fuente’s success has given Memphis the reputation of being a school that is a great stepping stone for aspiring coaches.

Top Players

Memphis is led by quarterback Brady White. So far White has impressed with a 70% completion rate and a 5/1 touchdown to interception ratio with 9.5 yards per attempt. Running back Darrell Henderson has compiled 288 yards on just 22 carries with four touchdowns.

Free ATS Pick

Memphis is much more of a developed and deeper team than Georgia State. Adding to that is their strong record as a big home chalk. Not only that but the Tigers will have the incentive of wanting to get back on track after their brutally tough loss at Navy.

College Football Odds: Memphis 42, Georgia State 13
