NCAA Football Results - Week 12 Online Recap

Week 12 saw the underdogs and visitors hold a slight edge on the board as undertakers once again finished in the black. What was written off by many fans as a potentially boring week with plenty of mismatches turned out to be highly entertaining and a reminder of what makes college football so great. The best game of the day was the Ohio State Buckeyes 52-51 overtime win at the Maryland Terrapins. But not far behind was the Oklahoma State Cowboys 45-41 comeback home win over the West Virginia Mountaineers. And the Wisconsin Badgers rose from the dead in a gutsy 47-44 triple overtime thriller at the Purdue Boilermakers. Meanwhile the coaching carousel looks like it may spin totally out of control. Let’s review a fantastic Week 12!

By the Numbers

The chalk did not hold in week 12 with favorites getting the money in just 31 out of 67 games on the board. Home cooking provided little in the way of nourishment as host teams covered just 32 games last week. Undertakers were paid in 35 of the 67 games. The Florida Gators covered the biggest number in a 63-10 win over the Idaho Vandals as 41.5-point chalks. The Kansas State Wildcats were the biggest Power Five dog to post a straight up win as they stayed bowl eligible in a 21-6 payout over the Texas Tech Red Raiders as 6.5-point home dogs.

Dirty Dana Poked in Stillwater

The West Virginia Mountaineers were fully exposed as a pretender wannabe program in their loss at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys rallied from a 31-14 halftime deficit to win the game on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Cornelius to Tylan Wallace with 42 seconds to go. Pokes coach Mike Gundy praised his staff for highly effective halftime adjustments. Cornelius exposed the porous Mountaineers defense for 338 yards passing and five touchdowns.

Urban Crackup

Just as interesting as the action on the field between Ohio State and Maryland was the constant sideline shots of Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer near the point of a total nervous breakdown. Several times in the back and four game did Meyer bend over as if stabbed in the gut. When he was standing straight his face had perpetual looks of anguish. All of this has triggered speculation about a potential “retirement” again for the Pope. On the field the Bucks defense has been rendered helpless. The Michigan Wolverines invade the Horseshoe this Saturday with the Big Ten East Division title at stake. Fred Sanford is reportedly on call for Meyer should he have another “heart attack.” Meyer was ripped for leaving the Florida Gators after a supposed heart incident that followed his discovery that there was no topping Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC.

Boiler Down

Purdue blew a 27-13 fourth quarter lead in their loss to Wisconsin as Senior Day went from extasy to agony with the Boilermakers failing to finish and attain bowl eligibility. For Wisconsin it was a display of the type of team resiliency that has been missing much of the year. Jonathan Taylor ran for 321 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Purdue has been in turmoil over the rumored departure of head coach Jeff Brohm to the Louisville Cardinals, where he was a former quarterback and alum.

X Box Chip Stomps Feet of Clay

The improving UCLA Bruins earned a 34-27 home win over the crosstown rival USC Trojans. UCLA head coach Chip Kelly is starting to get results at the end of his first season while USC has lost four of their last five and now stands at 5-6. Trojans Head coach Clay Helton is likely to face the firing squad despite an expensive buyout.

Seminoles Rising?

The Florida State Seminoles can attain bowl eligibility with a win at home this week over the Florida Gators. First year head coach Willie Taggart has been ripped for his team’s poor play and management but the Seminoles scored a 22-21 home payout last week to remain in contention for a bowl game. A win over Florida would give Taggart much needed momentum for recruiting. In particular FSU’s offense has been a major disappointment.
