Michigan Wolverines Win Total Odds Analysis

Michigan Wolverines Win Total Odds Analysis

The Michigan Wolverines’ 2018 season was rolling right along until the very end of it. Michigan was blown out by Ohio State and then Florida, putting a sour end to the campaign. The Wolverines faithful surely expected to be a major player in the College Football Playoff year in and year out under coach Jim Harbaugh, but that has yet to happen. Michigan hopes 2019 is the season that it gets over the hump, and the expectations are high. The current football odds have placed the team’s projected win total in the double-digits, which would put them in the national championship conversation if surpassed.

Michigan Win Total Odds Analysis

In order to cover the projected win total, Michigan could only afford to lose one game this season. The Wolverines are ranked No. 7 nationally to begin the year and will be the favorite in the vast majority of their contests, but this type of total does not allow for many off performances.

The Wolverines begin their season with a game against Middle Tennessee, followed by a matchup against Army. One of the tougher early-season challenges could be a road matchup against the Wisconsin Badgers on September 21. That is followed by games against Rutgers, Iowa and Illinois. The schedule then ramps up again with contests at Penn State and at home against Notre Dame. Michigan hosts Michigan State, goes on the road against Indiana and then finishes the year with a home game against the archrival Ohio State Buckeyes.

Michigan Odds

Michigan is the preseason favorite to win the Big Ten, and the home game against Ohio State at the end of the year could very well decide the champion. The Wolverines won 10 games in a row at one point last season but finished with the lull and will aim to remain strong from start to finish in 2019.

Quarterback Shea Patterson returns after throwing for 2,600 yards with 22 touchdowns against seven interceptions a season ago. The offensive line could be the strongest unit on the team and the wide receiver room has talent. Running back is a question mark because Karan Higdon has departed and backup Chris Evans has been deemed academically ineligible. While that is a blow, a strong offensive line should still be able to pave holes to whoever is given the ball in the backfield.

The Michigan defense is licking its wounds after allowing 103 points in the final two games of last season and also lost some serious talent. Rashan Gary, Chase Vinovich and Devin Bush all headed to the NFL after starring with the Wolverines, and it could take some time to replace all that star power. The defensive line still has a chance to be strong, led by Carlo Kemp, and there are formerly highly-rated recruits dotting the other position groups. Michigan has good coaching and is usually one of the better defensive teams in the Big Ten, so while there could be some hiccups, playmakers are expected to emerge.

Key Stats or Trends

The oddsmakers are high on the Wolverines in Harbaugh’s fifth season in Ann Arbor. Michigan has not won more than 10 regular season games in Harbaugh’s tenure and the last time it did so was all the way back in 2006. The schedule is helpful, as Michigan gets a couple of its more important games at home, while some of their opponents are expected to have down years.

It would be really interesting if this win total wager came down to the regular season finale against Ohio State. It is not a stretch to think the Wolverines will be sitting at nine or 10 wins heading into that game, and it could decide the outcome of the bet.
