LSU Tigers Win Total Odds Analysis

LSU Tigers Win Total Odds Analysis

The LSU Tigers have enough talent to be one of the better teams in the country in 2019, but they also have the type of schedule which could accumulate a fair number of losses. The oddsmakers took both into consideration when listing the current college football odds, which have LSU at a projected nine wins this season. The Tigers have been good but not great for the past several years and are hoping to take the next step and push Alabama and Georgia in the stacked SEC.

LSU Win Total Odds Analysis

LSU has a middling projected win total this season because the schedule is tough. The Tigers open up the season with a gimme against Georgia Southern but will then have to go on the road and face off against Texas in a big-time early-season contest. The Tigers follow that up with matchups against Northwestern State, Vanderbilt and Utah State.

The schedule ramps up again with a home game against Florida, followed by contests against Mississippi State, Auburn and Alabama. There is more of a soft landing as LSU will wrap things up against Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M. The Tigers have the ability to hang with the vast majority of the opponents on their schedule but there is a good deal of talented foes, so it will be interesting to see how they are able to navigate the slate.

LSU Odds

LSU’s strength has long been its defense, and that could be the case once again in 2019. The Tigers are led by superstar safety Grant Delpit, who will be one of the most talented players in college football this year. LSU has to replace Devin White, who was a top-5 pick in the NFL draft. The Tigers will rely on Jacob Phillips to lead the way this season after accumulating 87 tackles a year ago. Rashard Lawrence decided to return to school instead of going to the NFL, and he should be a big-time piece on the defensive line.

The offense returns quarterback Joe Burrow, who is hoping to ramp things up after throwing for 2,894 yards and 16 touchdowns a year ago. The running back situation looks solid, as Clyde Edwards-Helaire and freshman sensation John Emery, Jr. are set to replace Nick Brossette. Justin Jackson had 875 receiving yards a year ago and is expected to be the No. 1 receiver, although there are question marks behind him. LSU has boasted a strong defense and running game in recent years but the passing game has always lagged behind. Burrow needs to get it going in 2019 for this team to truly have a shot at competing for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Key Stats or Trends

LSU is a traditionally strong program, but it hasn’t won more than nine games in a regular season since all the way back in 2012. The Tigers seem to be dealing with the same issue in 2019 as they have in the past, as the aerial attack is not up to the same standard as some of the teams they will be facing. The betting public clearly likes the “over” on this bet but it carries some risk. The Tigers can only lose twice to hit it, and with Texas, Alabama, Auburn and Florida all on the docket, the “under” seems like a better choice at these odds.
