College Football Starting Quarterback Betting - NCAA Props

Among the big topics heading into the heat of training camps is of course speculation about who will be the starting quarterback at some of the top college football programs in the country. It all starts with the Oklahoma Sooners and graduate transfer Jalen Hurts, who has emerged as a large betting favorite to take over under center at a program that has made back to back playoff seasons. Up north the Wisconsin Badgers have what could be the most interesting battle. Jack Coan took over as the starter last year and showed rapid improvement in the season’s final weeks. But Wisconsin landed its most heralded quarterback recruit ever in blue chip five-star prospect Graham Mertz. Let’s take a look at what’s shaping up across the country!

2019 College Football Starting Quarterback Odds Analysis

Auburn Tigers

Head coach Gus Malzahn is on one of the hottest seats in the country because he is a reputed offensive and quarterback mastermind the presided over the nation’s 79th ranked overall offense in 2018. Freshman Joey Gatewood is the favorite to take over at quarterback with another freshman, Bo Nix, in contention as well. Gatewood is more to Malzahn’s style but Nix was a five-star recruit. This makes Nix a live dog.

Oklahoma Sooners

Jalen Hurts arrives from Alabama where he never got over the hurt of losing the starting quarterback job from Tua Tagovailoa. Certainly, head coach Lincoln Riley is the hottest quarterback and offensive whisperer in the land. The fact that Hurts came up clutch in coming off the bench to rally Alabama in the SEC championship game last December adds further credibility. In limited action last year with the Crimson Tide Hurts posted a career best 196.7 QB rating with 10.9 yards per attempt good for eight touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Wisconsin Badgers

At first glance last year’s season ending starter Jack Coan did not have eye-popping numbers. Coan finished with a 118 QB rating and just 5.5 yards per attempt with five touchdowns and three interceptions. However, the junior won three of his last four starts and came up clutch in a road win at Purdue while showing the ball handling magic of a wizard in the Badgers bowl win over Miami. Coan has a better mastery of the offense than does true freshman Graham Mertz, who many Badgers fans are clamoring for. Steady head coach Paul Chryst is unlikely to rush his prized recruit and the job appears to be Coan’s to lose.

Miami Hurricanes

Mark Richt resigned as head coach after a 35-3 bowl loss to Wisconsin because he and his son could not jumpstart the Hurricanes putrid offense. What was equally frustrating was that the lack of offensive support laid to waste a strong effort by the Turnover Chain defense. Sophomore Tate Martell is the favorite to take over as the top signal caller. Martell arrives as a transfer from Ohio State to pair with former Alabama offensive coordinator Dan Enos. If Martell could simply be average the Hurricanes could well contend in the ACC. Last year sophomore N’Kosi Perry saw most of the action down the stretch with mixed results. He finished with a modest 114.9 rating to go with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Redshirt freshman Jarren Williams is also in the mix.
