More Sports Teams Accepting Bitcoin

Did you know that there are some professional sports teams that are accepting Bitcoin as a payment method? The Sacramento Kings were the first team to accept Bitcoin and they were right at the forefront, as they accepted Bitcoin before it even became popular, with the Kings accepting the cryptocurrency in 2014. A college team, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, also started accepting Bitcoin in 2014. More teams are starting to look at Bitcoin payment methods and two more teams, the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Mavericks have recently started to accept Bitcoin.

Miami Dolphins Accepting Bitcoin and Litecoin

The Miami Dolphins announced that they would start accepting Bitcoin and Litecoin for payments starting this season. The Dolphins are working with Aliant Payments, a payment processing provider. Aliant Payments will make it so that customers can pay with Bitcoin or Litecoin when they purchase tickets in the team’s 50/50 raffle.

“The Miami Dolphins are always looking for ways to enhance the fan experience, and this partnership with Litecoin provides the ability for guests to enjoy our 50/50 raffle while donating to a great cause,” Miami Dolphins Vice President & Chief Information Officer Kim Rometo said in a statement.

Mavericks Join the Kings in Accepting Bitcoin

The Dallas Mavericks became the second team in the NBA to accept Bitcoin as a payment method, joining the Sacramento Kings. The Mavericks announced they will be accepting Bitcoin as payment for tickets and merchandise. The Mavericks are partnering with Lympo for accepting Bitcoin payment methods. The Kings became the first NBA team to accept Bitcoin when the price of Bitcoin was about $850 in 2014. The Kings have been at the forefront of cryptocurrency acceptance and recently they announced they would start mining Ethereum inside their arena with the proceeds going to local foundations in the Sacramento area. The Mavericks will now be the second NBA team to accept Bitcoin as a payment method for tickets and merchandise.

The Dolphins and Mavericks joining other marquee companies in accepting Bitcoin should not come as a surprise. Bitcoin has become more popular as a payment method in recent years and it may not be long before teams allow their fans to bet on games while inside the arena using Bitcoin. That may have sounded farfetched years ago, but it is just around the corner now that many states in the U.S. are allowing legal gambling. The Kings already have free "predictive gaming" inside their arena. Fans can get free "credits" that allow them to generate raffle tickets. New Jersey is one state that allows legal betting and it may not be long before people can wager on the Nets and Devils from inside the arena.
Technology continues to increase on a daily basis and more sports teams are realizing that they need to embrace cryptocurrencies. The NBA is definitely in front of the other sports leagues in terms of cryptocurrency acceptance, but it shouldn’t be long before other leagues get on board. It will start with teams accepting Bitcoin payments for tickets, merchandise, concessions, etc. and it will expand into other areas including sports betting.

Many top companies have already embraced cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin as an online payment method. Bitcoin has proven to be a reliable, safe and fast way to transfer money and businesses have taken notice. We mentioned earlier that the Dallas Mavericks are the latest team to get on board in accepting cryptocurrencies and they are not alone.
