Another cybersecurity firm, Trend Micro, found an old version of the malware named Glupteba that was using Bitcoin script. The new version of the malware is also causing problems for some Bitcoin users. “This technique makes it more convenient for the threat actor to replace C&C servers.” Trend Micro said in a recent statement. “If they lose control of a C&C server for any reason, they simply need to add a new Bitcoin script and the infected machines obtain a new C&C server by decrypting the script data and reconnecting.”
Trend Micro went on to say that companies should be very aware of the new Glupteba. “Since it is already proven to be an information stealer and a proxy for malicious spam, users and enterprises should be wary of this threat.”
Fortunately there are many cybersecurity firms that continually monitor threats on the Internet. France has an anti-cybercrime division called Cybergendarmes and they recently took out a botnet that infected 850,000 computers. They were able to locate and get rid of a pirate server in Paris that was the main source of the botnet. A botnet is a network of computers that has the intent of spreading a virus into other computers.
