Vito Mielnicki Jr. vs Nicholas DeLomba Preview

We’ve seen some impressive performances from Vito Mielnicki Jr. since he turned pro shortly after his 17th birthday. Mielnicki is a four-time Junior National Golden Gloves Champion, but he made the decision to turn pro early on rather than wait to try and make a name for himself at the Summer Olympics.

Mielnicki scored early knockouts over his first two opponents, and he won a second-round TKO on the undercard of a Deontay Wilder title fight two years ago. That was followed up with two unanimous decision wins before he earned another knockout win in August 2020.

The uncertainty of COVID meant he only entered the ring twice from February 2020 to February 2021, and he suffered a setback shortly afterwards. Mielnicki lost a majority decision to James Martin, falling to a boxer that had not shown the power to knock out any of his foes. It was a tough first defeat for Mielnicki, but he was dominant with a second-round TKO of Noah Kidd in July.

Nicholas DeLomba began his professional career in May 2013. He didn’t earn his first knockout until his seventh fight though despite taking the ring with a lot of tomato cans early on. DeLomba needed majority decisions to beat both Edwin Soto and Lazar Stojadinovic before finally scoring a TKO over Joe Wilson Jr. A subsequent TKO of 12-2 Juan Rodriguez Jr. led to him facing Gledwin Ortiz, but Ortiz dealt him his first loss.

DeLomba came off the mat strong with a unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Freddy Sanchez. He beat 11-1-1 Amos Coward by unanimous decision to set up a minor title fight with Jimmy Williams. The unbeaten Williams was too much though, and he won the fight by unanimous decision.

His last two impressive wins came against Louis Cruz in December 2017 and Chris Singleton in September 2018. DeLomba beat up two jobbers with a combined 92 losses around that same time, and he has only entered the ring once in the last 25 months. That came last February just before COVID when he lost a unanimous decision to Richardson Hutchins.

This could be an interesting fight, although Mielnicki is widely expected to win. While Mielnicki has four inches on his opponent, his reach is one-inch shorter, so that could affect his ability to get inside on DeLomba.
