Subriel Matias vs Jeremias Ponce Preview

Puerto Rico has an impressive boxing pedigree, and Subriel Matias is one of the top fighters the island has produced in recent years. Matias has been a knockout artist from the beginning of his career, as he knocked out each of his first 12 opponents inside of four rounds. He finally started getting tested in his next fight when he went six rounds with Wilberth Lopez, but tragedy struck in his next fight.

Matias took on Maxim Dadashev on July 19, 2019. Dadashev was 13-0 coming into their bout, and the winner was set up to receive a shot at a major title. Matias was clearly the better fighter, but Dadashev wanted to go the distance until his trainer threw in the towel at the end of the 11th Round. The Russian needed help getting out of the ring and then collapsed and was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma after being sent to the hospital. Dadashev ended up dying from his injuries a few days later, sending shockwaves throughout the boxing world.

It must have been tough for Matias to get back into the ring a short time afterwards, but he took care of business against Jonathan Eniz. However, he suffered his only loss on the undercard of the second fight between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, dropping a unanimous decision to Petros Ananyan a few months later. Matias did avenge that defeat last January though, stopping Ananyan in his tracks at the end of the ninth round.

Jeremias Ponce has done all you can ask of any fighter at this point in his career. Ponce hasn’t been overwhelming, but he has been convincing during his 30-0 start. He has been extremely active as his first professional fight took place in September 2015, and he won several minor titles in Latin America.

A split decision win over Leonardo Fabio Amitrano for the WBO South American super lightweight belt set up a title opportunity against Rico Mueller for the IBO super lightweight title. Ponce won a majority decision over Mueller to claim the belt, but he soon after gave it up as COVID wreaked havoc on international schedules. He has knocked out four of his last five opponents ahead of this fight, and that’s a good sign considering Matias’ power advantage.
Matias has the reach advantage by seven centimeters here over Ponce, and that does not bode well for the underdog.
