Caleb Plant vs Caleb Truax Preview

Plant was a respected amateur boxer, winning the silver medal at the 2011 Golden Gloves in the light heavyweight division. He didn’t turn pro until May 2014, but he looked sharp from the outset. Plant secured a first-round knockout in six of his first nine fights, and only one of those bouts went the distance.

He hasn’t had the same finishing power as he has risen the ranks and fights have lasted longer. Plant had to settle for unanimous decision wins over Jamar Freeman and Tyrone Brunson, and five straight bouts were decided by the judges once he graduated to the point where he was fighting 10-round minimums.

His biggest victory came two years ago when he toppled Jose Uzcategui to win the IBF super middleweight belt. Uzcategui had won the title against Andre Dirrell less than a year before that bout, but we have seen Plant keep a firm hold on the belt since that point. Plant stopped Mike Lee with a third-round TKO in his first title defense six months later, and he secured a tenth-round TKO win over Vincent Feigenbutz seven months after that.

Truax has been a professional fighter for almost 14 years. He began his career in April 2007, and he won his first 14 fights including a unanimous decision win over Kerry Hope in November 2009 that earned him the WBF international super middleweight belt. His loss to Jermain Taylor kept him from a title shot shortly afterwards though, relegating him to the lower ranks of cards for the early 2010s.

We saw him go 7-0-1 with a draw against Ossie Duran after the loss to Taylor. That earned him a bout against Daniel Jacobs for the WBA middleweight belt in April 2015, and he lost by a 12th round TKO. He lost by first-round TKO to Anthony Dirrell a year later, but he rebounded to upset James DeGale in order to win the IBF super middleweight belt by majority decision in December 2017.

Truax lost the title to DeGale in the rematch four months later. He responded with a third-round TKO of Fabiano Pena in August 2018 before an accidental head clash led to a no contest in a bout with Peter Quillin. The challenger won a majority decision over David Basajjamivule last year in his most recent bout, but it’s clear he is on a lower tier than Plant. An upset is considered highly improbable as he has yet to beat an elite fighter.
