Serie A Props - Odds to Win Title Update

We’re only eight games into the Serie A campaign, but many are already awarding Juventus their eighth straight league championship. Juventus have once again appeared to be head and shoulders better than any other team in Italy, and they are already six points clear of the field. They have a head-to-head win over their biggest competitor in Napoli, so it will be hard for anyone to catch them if they don’t take their foot off the gas pedal. Every team other than Napoli is a heavy underdog to rally to win the league.

Juventus

It’s been the status quo in Italy so far this season. Juventus have dominated the league like they have every season this decade, and it’s hard to see any club giving them a real challenge. They brought back most of their stars from the last few campaigns, and their new acquisitions are finding their way in the league too.

Cristiano Ronaldo needed some time to find his first goal in Serie A, but he has looked like the Ronaldo of old lately. Through eight matches he has four goals and four assists, and he has provided constant pressure in a league that prides itself on defense.

Elsewhere, Emre Can has looked very sharp and his physical nature has helped the back line continue to perform well, and Joao Cancelo is starting to make an impact too.

I’ll be honest. Barring injury or a contender making some incredible mid-season acquisitions, Juventus look like a lock to win. Being six points clear with a win over your top rival early on is a tremendous advantage that I don’t think Juventus will relinquish.

Napoli

Losing Maurizio Sarri to Chelsea this summer has not slowed down Napoli’s attack. Lorenzo Insigne has been one of Serie A’s best goal scorers, and he has six goals through the first eight matches of the season. Arkadiusz Milik, Piotr Zielinski, and Dries Mertens have also been impressive with their contributions, and this team can play up and down better than almost any other team in the league.

The problems have come at the back. Napoli have given up three goals to Sampdoria and three goals to Juventus this season, and they are allowing more than a goal per game. Goalkeeper David Ospina has not been the problem. Ospina has played rather brilliantly in goal, and he has spared his defenders’ blushes on more than one occasion. However, Napoli may need to add a defender or two if they really want to compete with Juventus.

Inter Milan

Inter did not get off to a great start this season. The club dropped matches to Sassuolo and Parma early on, and a draw at home to Torino was another slight embarrassment. However, they have come on strong over the last month, winning six straight matches in all competitions.

During this stretch, Inter have relied on their defense. They allowed a total of four goals in those six victories that included two wins over Champions League opponents.

Although the club spent a lot of money to acquire Radja Nainggolan this offseason, he has not been the offensive spark Inter have needed for the last few years. For Inter to make up the deficit and contend with Juventus, Nainggolan will need to start playing top-class football or the club will need to find another weapon to use on the attack.

Rest of the Field

Every other club is at least nine points back of Juventus at this point, so the remaining teams have a miniscule chance of winning the league. Lazio are currently leading the pack as the best of the rest, but the field is crowded behind Inter. One of those teams will likely need to shell out millions of Euros to make a real run at the top.
