Odds to Win the 2018-19 English Premier League

The second week of August will herald the start of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign, and 19 other clubs will be gunning to take down Manchester City. The EPL has been more wide open than any of the other major European leagues since its foundation, and that gives hope to some of the smaller clubs. Teams like Leicester City and Blackburn have won the Premier League in recent memory, and no team has been able to repeat as champions over the last nine years.

Can Manchester City repeat?

Pep Guardiola led Manchester City to the most impressive Premier League showing we have ever seen. The Citizens finished the year as the first team in Premier League history to reach 100 points, and they set a slew of other records that are unlikely to be toppled anytime soon.

It’s bad news for the rest of England that the club may have gotten even better this offseason. After failing to complete a deal for him at the spring deadline, City was able to acquire Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City over the summer, and that will give a team with a plethora of options one of the best wingers in England.

Fatigue may be a factor though, especially early in the season. Manchester City sent a club-high 16 players to the World Cup this summer, and some of those players may need extra time to recuperate.

The rest of the Big Six

Liverpool has the second-lowest odds to win the Premier League, and many are keen on the Reds chances this year. The club has the best player in the league in Mo Salah, and Liverpool was able to deal Manchester City its first loss last year and knocked the club out of the Champions League. They are looking to add a star goalkeeper to boost their chances, and the club is supposedly close to landing Alisson from Roma.

There is plenty of optimism at Old Trafford to heading into the year. Jose Mourinho’s abrasive style rubbed many players the wrong way, but he was able to get the results he needed to lead Manchester United to a second-place finish last season. United have plenty of talent and this club will be one to watch if they can all come together.

Chelsea are next on the list of favorites but look for the odds on the Blues to rise soon. Not only did the club switch managers less than a month prior to the start of the season, they look set to lose Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard to Real Madrid as well. That is sure to land them a hefty sum, but it will be interesting to see how they spend the money.

This might be the year for Tottenham to make a big splash. Spurs players looked great at the World Cup with Hugo Lloris leading France to the World Cup, and Harry Kane finishing as the Golden Boot winner. This is an experienced defense that will look to put the clamps on opposing offenses.

The last of the contenders is Arsenal. The Gunners made a major change this offseason by parting ways with long-time manager Arsene Wenger, and Unai Emery will look to re-shape the team in his image. It’s hard to imagine Arsenal doing much this season though, as the other five sides all have much more talent.

Longshot to watch

West Ham made a splash with some big moves this offseason, and the Hammers are the most likely longshot to make a run at a Premier League title. The club has already doled out 95 million pounds this summer, and manager Manuel Pellegrini has a proven track record of being able to get the best out of his teams. If West Ham can hold on to Marko Arnautovic, the Hammers may have the talent to make some noise.
